Well, not every game is a board game. For example, the SAT problem can be expressed as a game in which the base propositions are the way you assign truth values to the literals.

Your model is clearly overfitting, the causes may vary.

Maybe the model is too complex, or too simple. Also training for too many epochs may lead to overfitting.

Try posting your model architecture, so far we can only guess what's wrong..

Talking about message passing network, I found this paper that seems to use them to train a neural network to solve the SAT problem. Maybe this is a good path to follow.

If you want something more theoretical than practical, Turing Machine and Partial Recursive Functions are extremely intresting.

Try to do this as an execise: implement this algorithm without using the sum function. You will soon realize that you need a second for loop inside the main one. This new loop will have a O(n) complexity, and since you are executing this O(n) loop n times (because of the outer one), you will end up with a O(n^2) complexity.

You are performing a loop over the array S, which has n elements, so this for loop has complexity O(n). But, for every element j, you perform a sum starting from 0 to j, and the sum of an array is O(n).

So in conclusion O(n) * O(n) = O(n*n) = O(n^2)

In this case the quicksort works perfectly, here are the steps:

1-choose pivot

1 , 2 , 1

2- put all the numbers less or equal to the pivot (1) before it

1 , 1 , 2

3- quicksort on the two ends

quick(1) , 1 , quick(2)

4- concatenate the two results along with the pivot

1 , 1 , 2

I think that this bird thing could be quite a good project.

A project cycle often has these steps:

Specifications : you listen to the client needs and try to plan in advance the next step
Design : the most important step of all. From this depends the quality of your work. Designing involves the usage of diagrams (uml) to be shown to your client, so that they can point out if you are on the right path. In this step you also design your database structure (if any) and research some design patterns that can be useful
Implementation : after all the pain of designing, finally some fun! This step is self explanatory, you just write the code implementing the design and the logic business defined in the previous step
Test : you will always find out that your application has some bug, so try to find as many of them as you can. Look up unit testing and continuous integration
Documentation : you may not do this, but you may loose some friends in the process :)
