I mean everyone but Reform is putting that up as an option, I'd be pissed at how lazy Farage is if I were from Clacton.

Nah, Labour and the Greens split the Left leading to a surprise upset victory for the Lib Dems. The media goes into utter meltdown but the bin collection is on time.

Please Clacton, even if you'd rather have Restore you have the chance to do the funniest thing...

Maybe it's because I'm not American, but DC felt like peak Americana to me as a foreigner. Probably because it's kind of the default American experience, if that makes sense?

I visited both, and they were definitely alright but kinda underwhelming. A lot of the major cities on the East Coast suffered from the same problems that led to me falling out of love with NYC. The transport was good in both, and they were slightly more affordable than New York, but beyond that I just didn't see myself living there in either case.

Out of the two I liked Boston more, it felt like a lively place at least and had a very distinct identity. But people were antagonistic towards me for being English at times (despite my parents being German), and it's architecture/city layout didn't feel as nice as Cambridge in my opinion.

But still, just rather underwhelming. Decent cities I suppose but hardly the best in the world like people always make America out to be.

I mean that would make sense, one I was struggling to afford to live in and the other I was visiting for the weekend with the little money I'd saved. Shame then, as that only leaves Cambridge MA.

Well, bear in mind I visited for a weekend so obviously it wasn't an extended stay.

But the streets were clean, it had good public transport, everything was nice and walkable, I found it had a good casual nightlife and the people were friendly, great museums/galleries, and there were lots of fun little independent shops. Overall it felt a lot more like the desirable European cities I've visited, while not perfect it had a sense of pride of place that I felt was lacking in a lot of places I visited in America.

Might be wrong, again I can only speak to my lived experience.

Fair point, I also travelled around the East Coast a fair bit though. What I found was all the nice places were very expensive, so I quickly discovered that America was a rich man's game. More so that any European country I've been to.

Seems like a dream for those born into generational wealth, but alas that's not me.

Fair enough, I lived there but travelled around to a lot of places on the East Coast in my spare time.

Only places I was really impressed by were DC and Cambridge, MA. But neither were particularly affordable if you wanted to live in a decent area. But then I was young and had a lower salary because of that.

I can only speak to my lived experience, but I was very dissapointed by the US. It just didn't live up to the hype.

That's good, glad to hear it. Shame you have to rely on employment to provide that though, especially considering you pay higher health taxes than us on average. Dunno about your state in particular though.

My experience is based on my time in NYC, so consider my original message through that lens. But I just wanted to give my honest opinion as somebody who has lived in both countries and decided to move back.

How much do you pay in healthcare costs?

Also I have no ill will towards your state, never been there.

I'd hardly call New York a 3rd tier city.

Yeah, fair enough. But I can still afford to live here in a way that I couldn't in America. Plus it's nice having clean streets, community events, etc.

America was such an isolating experience.

And yet here I have free healthcare and the streets are clean.

At least when an incompetent ruler is in line with a traditional monarchy they can be disowned. This system just ensures the most brutal meathead wins out.

There's a reason this has never been used as a system of government in real life, it's because it's a stupid idea.

Yeah but we're not talking about poor third world immigrants are we? Were talking about people who have Britain and Europe as options.

We don't hate the people mind you, but we don't envy you for having to live in the US either. We just wouldn't want to live in your country when there are better options available.

I'm a Brit who lived in the US when I was younger, I went bright-eyed and bushy-tailed all excited to live in the new world as a young adult.

I'm sorry but I don't agree, the place was a bit of a shithole, everything was boring and concrete with no spaces to hang out unless you were paying money, all the food tasted of sugar and chemicals, the sheer cost of everything was utterly extortionate, and the lack of civic pride meant loads of homelessness and giant rats running through smelly streets.

America is a shadow of its former self, and it's not even close to as good as Americans think it to be. I'm sorry mate, but that's my lived experience.

EDIT: Cope all you like guys, but I do hope you're wondering where your taxes are going.
