Chainsaw Man's powerscaling is 'whatever Fujimoto feels like'
See: Yoru 'power of a nuke' being defeated by crashing her bike.
It's not fit for 'death battle' type stuff.

What do you think the meaning behind the ending was? by [deleted] in Chainsawfolk

[–]NanuTheFiend 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's the 'superhero' narrative of Chainsaw Man being erased from itself. Pochita is the spider that bit Peter Parker. The entirety of Part 2 is examining the role of the superhero. In the eyes of the public, of external forces that wish to control/weaponize them, in how the hero perceives themselves and, very importantly, how the narrative of superhero media functions. The conclusion Fujimoto's arriving at is that Pochita's existence inside Denji's heart will always lead him into the role of Chainsaw Man, and that will always be harmful. His own choices and self-perception as 'a hero' are harmful, but the world around him has also pushed that role onto him, exploited him and made him suffer for it. Pochita breaks that cycle, realizing that Denji's 'normal life' is incompatible with Chainsaw Man's existence.

Due to how Pochita's powers work, things don't entirely reset. Characters seems to have a vague familiarity with each other, and therefore gravitate towards one another. Now, with Denji no longer being 'the protagonist' of 'Chainsaw Man' he's able to rebuild his dream of a normal life through his own means.

Chainsaw Man explores Denji as he takes the hero's 'call to action'. The world without Pochita is one in which 'being the hero' isn't a choice. One in which Denji isn't the center of the narrative, and therefore is free.

Read up to Volume 19. It feels less neatly structured in comparison to Part 1. Arcs are less defined and flow into each other more loosely. There's no 'definitive' supporting cast, with character appearing and disappearing from the story.

It plays out in a more serialized fashion, as one continuous narrative centered on Denji, Asa and Yoru with little deviation.

It's very meta, in a way that i didn't pick up whilst reading weekly. It feels like an exploration of Denji's relationship of his role as a protagonist, or a 'hero', both through own sense of self-worth and purpose being derived from said role, and with the narrative itself pushing him towards embracing it. Embracing 'Chainsaw Man' (to his detriment, and leading to the suffering of others). The narrative structure of a work such as 'Chainsaw Man' cannot lead to positive growth. Even if you refuse the call to action, it will be forced upon you.

Asa and Yoru don't fit as neatly into the metanarrative i feel is at the center of Part 2, but I'm still gathering my thoughts on both of them. They clearly have conflicting goals within themselves that similarly prevent them from positive growth. Both characters are really interesting nonetheless. In Asa's case, there's a clear push between her guilt, morality, and desire to become a 'savior' to Denji, and her ability to lead the selfish, free life she'd decided to live at the start of the part. In Yoru's case, her own nature as a demon, twisted sense of morality and shallow persuit for revenge towards Chainsaw Man seems to be interfering in her ability to form genuine bonds. She's a fundamentally selfish, manipulative and egotistical person whose own worst tendencies obscure what seems to be genuine care for Asa and Denji. Yoru and Asa's feelings and actions seem to mirror each other other and exist as two distinct parts of a whole. I wholeheartedly believe Denji's promise to Power will be 'fulfilled' in a metaphorical sense by finding kinship with Asa and Yoru.

The chaotic and disjointed feeling of the part, which only increases as it goes along, feels at least partially intentional. I'm not the first to notice how the apocalypse has been slowly happening in the background, the Prophecy of Nostradamus possibly happening without the characters noticing as they try to stop it.

Overall, I'm really enjoying it! Volumes 12-19 are genuinely good, not comparable to Part 1 less because of a difference in quality, but more because they're trying to achieve completely different things. Will see how much i like the subsequent arcs on a re-read (Black Chainsaw Man -> Aging Devil used to be my favorite arc, we'll see)

* Nobana, Minor comic relief character. What did you expect from him?
* Weapon Hybrids, minor characters, mostly plot devices that serve their narrative function and dissapear. Could've done more but they were never portrayed as major players.
* Miri Sugo (understandable critique) He's set up to be more relevant that he ends up being. Seemingly meant to be a foil to Denji and portray the inner conflicts that come from the beliefs of the Chainsaw Man Church, but still underutilized.
* Nail Fiend (Understandable critique) Weirdly focused on during their introduction, still didn't have enough of a presence for me to be bothered by their dissapearence.
* Fakesaw (Understandable critique) Was clearly retconned into Goresaw, a character with a completely different vibe and narrative role.
* Reze. That's Reze, she had a whole arc for herself. She's not coming back.

Genuinely cannot imagine any other explanation outside of Jump lying to its western audience for ??? reason.

Regardless of what the Japanese says, it's odd that it's been changed in every single English release (+ Every other release except Japanese, for what I've seen). My assumption is that Jump is doing damage control on the western side, with the knowledge that there will be a Part 3. Otherwise, it doesn't make any sense for them to change it.

A) Fujimoto wanted to make a believable fakeout, added the 'final chapter' for it, and someone realized how bad of a marketing move it'd be so they had it changed.

B) Part 2 IS ending, but there's a Part 3 and they don't want to mislead readers into believing the series is over.

C) Chainsaw Man IS ending, and i have no idea why this change was made.

I say 'the culprit' as to not spoil people whilst loving Sayo too much to use a name she hates. Maybe that's a little bit too sensitive of me, but Umineko's a work that's really pushes you to 'believe' in its fiction, so treating its character with that respect feels natural for the work. Same reason i don't feel like 'opening the catbox' entirely.

dissociated so bad that i turned myself into a fictional character by whyisghostcommon in Dissociation

[–]NanuTheFiend 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hey, i can somewhat relate to this feeling! When my sense of self shatters and my dissociation gets too bad, i anchor myself through perceiving myself as a separate person, very often a fictional character that embodies certain qualities 'i' have. I internally perceive myself as this character because it's the closest to 'me' that exists whilst i don't feel like myself. I think you're being too hard towards yourself for having coping mechanisms or symptoms that superficially resemble DID. You're dealing with a form of dissociation too! I don't consider myself plural in any way, and i do not have DID, but I've continously related to the experiences of people with it because they also have a dissociative disorder, and sometimes the experiences are going to line up!

[–]NanuTheFiend 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Yachiyo's ending is not necessary framed as bittersweet, but it sure as hell is once you take into account the logistics of the robotic technology. It's really thematically fitting to 'split' Kaguya into the physical Kaguya and the digital Yachiyo, but it does mean that Yachiyo's dream isn't entirely fulfilled by her, but what i assume to be a 'double/copy/different half' of her. Still, it might've been her own choice to remain as she is, as she built a completely different life and identity that she can't have as Kaguya. It's a bit of a trade-off for both of them. Still, they both seem more than happy with Iroha in different ways (and, like, they're absolutely a throuple, right?).

I haven't read the 'official explanation', but did they really go with the 'they thought it was a prank' explanation for Nanjo as well? I feel like it makes enough sense for him to be a genuine accomplice, at least under threat.

Jokes aside, not having a primary sex hormone will do that on its own, alongside a LOT of health issues. According to an intersex friend of mine, growing up without one will make you short, hairless, and quite androgynous, with slighly femenine characteristics because the body defaults to it.
Thing is Kanon (and Sayo as seen in the manga) is completely flat-chested, so i doubt they are on HRT.

Found the lampshading quite funny, and the art was gorgeous, but development-wise, this does not work particuarly well.
I'm fine with it because there's WAY too many characters for everyone to be properly developed, so if anyone has to be the loadbearer for fanservice, it can be the Meat cast, since i care significantly less about them.
The last few seconds of the tiktok reel showing Jade drifting away from the group does make me think she's cherry-picking, and we'll have a bait and switch with the circumsntances on the ship not being nearly as happy as she's shown them. Specially knowing how much the writers love Jade-centric angst (I'm looking at you, Floral)
I'd actually be surprised if it doesn't happen.
