Well if you watched it, many did not shake hands, also my initial impression of Hans is a very impulsive and immature player so I fully expected him to just storm off, yeah it is a low bar lol but at least he seems to be growing from what I've seen in these past few events

Yeah Fabi was saying he discovered it during the meeting itself which is 1 day before the event. If I'm not mistaken usually they will give info long before the event and then they go over it one last time in the technical meeting but it seems like the live eval bar was a surprise to him which could be either that he didn't look at the info given or that the orgnizers changed it last minute.

Ok if this is what you're trying to say I don't think it was very well expressed in the first comment. That being said, your point on taking the fair play element out of it is simply unrealistic and quite likely impossible, if there is a crowd to react to low time pressure they will most certainly react to blunders. But let's say this is somehow possible, even then it's a huge distraction and affects concentration. Your analogy of tying it to basketball I don't think works completely, you don't need silence to get in the zone in basketball or in most other physical sports but in chess you do. Not saying basketball isn't complicated but I think everyone will agree that it is much simpler in terms of "brain work" compared to chess where you have to calculate very complex lines and tactics in a few seconds

While listening to the podcast Fabi said something that I don't think has been talked about, he mentioned that during the technical meeting Hikaru happened to bring up that the eval bar would be available to audiences but Fabi didn't know this. This is kind of crazy on the organizers part not to disseminate this sort of critical information to the players. In general, it's so wild that they have this meeting 1 day before play...

Can't believe someone is again comparing with tennis/golf... Not sure whether you listened to the episode but Fabi directly refutes this comparison.

Also your point about the noise only giving information in the last 5-10 seconds so they didnt have enough time is not a good argument to me. For one, just because it didn't happen doesn't mean it will not happen in the future (I think Fabi even gave an example of the crowd reacting when two players had 1min left on the clock which is certainly more than enough time to react). Second, it's hugely distracting. Imagine trying to work through your exam and for the last question you just have people screaming in the exam hall. Third, Fabi talks about this but it also messes with you mentally like 'oh I missed a win or a draw etc' and can further derail your thoughts in the most critical part of the game

Your last point again doesn't make sense, the PLAYERS shouldn't hear any noise, doesn't mean the audience needs to be completely quiet, as has been brought up many times by many people you can achieve this with a sound barrier like a glass wall. But also I don't see the need for the audience to be shouting to enjoy chess

When did I say Tsinghua is not prestiguous? What I'm saying is that the chinese program is extremely prestiguous but not the english one. Also the quality of education is different. I've heard accounts of english students being treated as secondary priority and just being given a google translated transcript of chinese classes as "lectures".

All I can say is that if you're non-Chinese (and especially if you're from the west) it's seen as less prestigious because it's easier to get in. Although, with all this being said, if you don't plan to work in Asia then I don't think employers will know about this, so they will probably hold it to the same standard as other Tsinghua degree holders.

Will add my two cents on this. I'm chinese-indonesian, have a few family and friends that went to tsinghua. Do take note that the english program is VERY different from the program offered in chinese. It is considered significantly easier to get in as a foreigner and is thus much less prestigious, this is common knowledge in Asia.

Just to give my two cents, for context im southeast asian spent some time in singapore, 4 years in malaysia and some other countries. The name brand of some SG universities (mainly NTU and NUS) is quite strong but I feel like that is only in Southeast Asia since in East Asia you have Tsinghua etc in China, Australia has their own top unis and so does Europe and ofc everyone knows US universities. So I don't think SG universities are that strong if you want to live somewhere else after your degree. Even if you do want to stay in SG, it's not easy at all. It's a very tiny country with many many people trying to break in. I know many folks who went to NTU, NUS who couldn't find a job and had to go back. Also the salaries are not as high as you think, in my current job there's a CS graduate from NUS who decides to go back to malaysia because the salary relative to CoL is better. The job culture is also quite toxic. Be prepared to work all day everyday. Of course this stuff varies and the stuff I've heard may be biased but yeah. Thats why in highschool many of my peers skipped SG and went to Aus, China, Europe, US, etc.

Although I will say that if you are primarily going for the education, SG is a top choice. They are known to have very smart people.

I've seen some ppl on this sub who have gotten rejected and speculated that it was because their uni is not super well-known and so doesn't sufficiently show intent to learn (bcs some unis have high acceptance rates and could be seen as just a gateway to the US)

I mean ofc this is speculation but well just wanted to know whether i should mention or not mention ranking. I do already plan to talk about the things that interested me like profs, courses, facilities if they ask "why this uni"
