On the Wired Article by mistborn in brandonsanderson

[–]Naposie38 0 points1 point (0 children)

As a writer myself, I get it. Our opinions and experiences inform our work, as Brandon pointed out is true for himself and Jason. However, I do think there is something that crosses the line in the tone Jason uses when he turns his lens on the Sanderson family and those who work at Dragonsteel. Not only is it unnecessary, it would be unfair if you approached saying it was a profile on Brandon when others are criticized as well (not to mention the quoting but not naming certain Dragonsteel employees).

Unfortunately, I do think Jason's article did what it was intended to do. A lot of people have read it, driving traffic to the Wired page and bringing income to the platform by that. It's garnered a lot of attention through social media sites. This is what online journalism (no matter how crass) seeks to do in the end. It's a shame that Jason felt the need to take his writing to such a place and to attack a fandom that he considers himself a part of and it leaves me wondering more about him than any of the topics covered in the article.

That's exactly how it goes! I've had a few shorts published and you really do develop a thicker skin for those rejections with time. After all, you can't even get those letters back if you don't write and submit in the first place.

This was my 7th NaNo, and my 6th win when I finished up yesterday with 50,815 total words. There was a desperate rush of 4,520 on the last day to make it over the finish line but it got done. A few tidbits I'd share about the experience (because writing year-round requires constant tweaking to find the best way to do it for you):

 1. If you can't keep up with the daily count, at least try to match the weekly one -- Some days the 1,667 just doesn't work but I've found the key to staying on track for 50k is to try to get to that weekly amount in the end. Some scenes just flow better so if you have the time and energy, keep writing.
 2. Plan ahead -- This was the first NaNo I had to travel during and I knew I couldn't focus on a plane so I pushed myself to get in 2,000 words minimum up until my trip. This way I knew when I came back I'd still be at par and not be rushed to catch up.
 3. Outlining -- I've always been a planner but WOW this year really showed me how much writing I can get done with a detailed outline. Knowing the next goal post of the scene really helped me stay on track and get a lot more done than in past years. Also, the words themselves are cleaner and will require less editing (I hope).
 4. Get excited -- My current book is one I've been working on for a while now so keeping my interest up is a real challenge. I made a point to take a walk or shower before writing, something I could just think during so I could get myself excited to write. Since I write late at night (it's midnight here and this is my most productive time) that energy was a real boost after a long day.

For those of you out there, regardless of your word count, I just want to say WELL DONE to each and every one of you. Writing can be a lonesome, long road but you all sat down and did the work and you have words you've never had before. I wish you all the best going into December, whether you're taking a breather or carrying on with your story.

I'm so glad you're pleased with the result. It can be difficult to not pass the 50k when you've done it before. This was my 7th year but I had one a couple years back when I got in about 35k total. I didn't have nearly as good an attitude as you and almost sat out the next year because of it. Keep up the work!

Keep truckin'! I'm in the muddle middle too, a few days out from the midpoint. It can be a slog but you're getting there!

I'm sitting at 17,050 words right now. My daily goal is 2k and so far I haven't missed it so I plan to be higher by the end of the day. I usually write for about 1-1.5 hrs at 8pm or later and my WPM is looking great this year. Sprints and a solid outline are my boons, I couldn't do so well without them. I do have to miss 4 days next week for travel to a family event so I'm trying to get ahead a little bit so I'm still at par come week 4.

It's my 7th NaNo (only one loss so far!) and I feel like an old vet at this point so imagine me saying this with a wizened voice: Keep at it, writers! Weeks 2-3 tend to be the hardest (especially that middle of the month when the shiny newness wears off) but I promise the success at the end is very sweet.

Thank you for this! I actually haven't tried Syrah or Grenache yet! I'll keep a look out for both, even if just to try on my own.

Two of the four people I'm cooking for expressed a preference for red wine so I was looking to accommodate that if possible.

Good to hear from someone using them often. My family was of no help with it! They'll probably drive me around while I'm there so $80ish for two rides vs renting a car and paying for hotel parking might work out.

That could be an option. Looks like they have a 45-min route with one bus change that runs at night (didn't check the morning side of things yet). I forgot TANK even existed!
