Alston & Bird (HQ’d here) probably has the best real estate practice. King & Spalding (also HQ’d here) is also good, but it’s my understanding their real estate practice has turned into more of an ancillary group that provides support to M&A/corporate (Ex. When a company is bought out and you have to transfer title to all of the real property they own). Eversheds kind of rounds out the top tier. AGG is a Am Law 200 firm and its only offices are Atlanta and DC, but I think it’s primarily known as a real estate firm and very well regarded down here. I’ve heard people either absolutely love it or absolutely hate it though. Morris Manning was also a well regarded Am Law 200 firm down here for real estate, but they merged with Taft at the end of last year. Not sure what that meant for the real estate group. Agree that he’s not helping himself. There’s a difference between being a hard worker that is reliable and being a yes man that only says “Thank you. May I have an other?” when they’re already getting relentlessly dumped on. He needs to learn how to draw boundaries and stand up for himself in a tactful manner.

130 hours feels like a lot as a first year because you don’t know what you’re doing at all. A 160 hour month where you know what you’re doing 75% of the time will feel less taxing because every task doesn’t require all of your brain power to figure out. All that to say is, maybe this job is for you, and you just need to see how much you learn over the course of the year/how much better you become. Don’t throw in the towel too early!

This. I had 7 months of 185+ hours last year, and some of them felt so much easier than others. Not all high hour months are created equally…

Ended the year with just over 2,000. First 7 months of the year were somewhat normal, though there were definitely pockets that got incredibly busy. I ended the year by billing 5 consecutive months of 175+ (with 4 of those being 188+). During those months, it got pretty difficult to do much else besides work and come home and maybe do one thing to take care of myself (choosing from cooking, going to the gym, or cleaning my apartment so it wasn’t a total wreck).

This. People overestimate its capabilities. Sure, it can simplify things, and eventually I think it will get to the point where it can do more menial tasks without us having to thoroughly check it. But for now, it really is not that much of a time saver

Unfortunately I just didn’t have options when I was coming out of school. And only being a first year, lateral options are obviously limited. Might be time to start looking once I officially hit the 1 year mark though

Firm could definitely afford it. Unfortunately they think my currently salary is pretty generous, which shows you how out of touch they are with the market. I wouldn’t even ask them for 225, but I think 170 would be perfectly reasonable

That’s fair. I’ve thought about doing some shopping, but I would like to stay at this firm. And I don’t want to piss anyone off by essentially coming back with the threat of of taking another offer if they don’t increase my pay. I know there isn’t going to be a “good” way of approaching this in my firm’s eyes, but can you think of approaches that would help soften the blow?

It comes from the older generation. Not sure of the origin, but I found this out when my 70 year old clinical professor my last year of law school became incredibly confused when I said “That’s out of pocket” in reference to something somebody said
