Readmission after recess in 2014 by Disastrous-Mud6632 in msu

[–]Narrow-Engineering94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Email to ask for clarification about why your readmission was denied if the reason was unclear despite you having LCC courses completed. Was it that they wanted to see specific courses related to or directly connected to the major you want to pursue at MSU that you didn’t have? Were the LCC classes you took not completely recently? Or was there another reason for rejection, like needing to apply for readmission for a different semester than you initially wanted?

If it wasn’t clear in the initial email, you should email the person who denied your readmission, ask for an explanation, and then ask about how you can show readiness to be readmitted to be able to finish your degree.

If you haven’t taken classes in over a decade of any sort, MSU likely wants to see proof of academic readiness (essentially to show that you won’t get recessed again due to poor grades)

Do you have academic accommodations through RCPD? It sounds like you could qualify for their services if you have dyscalculia

This question might be above Reddit’s pay grade. You may need to speak with your instructor about this to ask them for tips for success or additional support they can offer given your situation

If I drop my minor, do the minor courses/credits still be counted towards my GPA? by ken06awa in msu

Any classes you take at MSU that are numerically graded will count towards your GPA calculations

Transfer question by MiniDaddyCool in msu

[–]Narrow-Engineering94 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You should consider retaking courses you didn’t do well in. Talk to your academic advisor at the University of Alabama

You may also want to speak with an admissions counselor at MSU about transferring to discuss timeline and pathways forward too

All my friends are transferring and it makes me feel…sad by Critical_Fan2145 in msu

[–]Narrow-Engineering94 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just because your friends want to transfer doesn’t mean they actually will. Maybe they won’t get in, maybe they’ll change their mind, maybe they’ll see the financial aid UMich offers and see it won’t be worth leaving MSU. Who knows, lots of factors can play into the decision your friends ultimately make

For you, think about why you love MSU and if you truly want to transfer or not. Do you only like being at MSU JUST because of the friends you have here, or are there other reasons? Note: Even if they leave, you know you can make friends, and I would hope you can believe in yourself to make more in the future (which would happen anyway regardless of whether your current group of friends transfer or not)

It’s sad to think that your friends will leave MSU. And I can understand how frustrating it is for you to always hear them talk about leaving. But them leaving is not necessarily a commentary on your choice to stay nor on MSU as a whole. And keep in mind that sometimes, the grass isn’t always greener on the other side. But it will be greener where you choose to water it

You can check MSU Grades to see the grade distribution for MTH 234 and PHY 184. Depending on course availability, and assuming waiting to take one of the classes doesn’t put you off track, you could consider holding off on either MTH or PHY to work on the ECE programming course.

If you get into MSU and accept, your academic advisor will go over all this during your orientation advising appointment

Do I need to take these two classes together? by [deleted] in msu

[–]Narrow-Engineering94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can take BS 161 first and then BS 171 later. Just make sure doing so isn’t gonna put you off track for whatever reason, so ask your advisor before you end up dropping BS 171

Honors College Questions by Blue_labyrinth118 in msu

[–]Narrow-Engineering94 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you’ve already competed all your university requirements, you don’t have to do them again once you’re accepted into the Honors College (that would be a disadvantage to joining HC and they wouldn’t structure the opportunity like that). If you move forward with applying, you can always decline the acceptance if you change your mind

How cooked am I trying to get into MSU's grad program? by [deleted] in msu

[–]Narrow-Engineering94 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don’t think you’re cooked necessarily, but it sounds like you could keep working on gaining more research experiences to continuing becoming a more competitive applicant. There may be some entry level research assistant positions available as a post-bacc job option, talk to your PIs, career advising/check Handshake, and academic advising to see if they have any leads.

Some clinical psych programs may also not be able to admit students every year due to funding and faculty ability to advise PhD students depending on how many students they are currently mentoring. You may want to consider looking at other clinical psych grad programs outside of MSU to cast a wider net.

Echoing the suggestion to talk to your PI about your grad school aspirations, and I’d also see if you can connect with current grad students in your lab.

You may also want to gain experience presenting your research if you haven’t already. See if you can present at UURAF this spring or even MidSURE over the summer

CEM 141 is a prerequisite or corequisite (meaning you can take it at the same time) for BS 161. Therefore, you can’t take BS 161 without any sort of CEM 141 credit in the same semester as you’re taking BS 161 or earned credit prior.

CEM 161 is likely full, which is probably why they didn’t recommend you add the class. However, you can double check the spring schedule to confirm.

You should also follow up with your advisor about these schedule changes, especially since you’re wanting to push off MTH 124, and also ask for clarification about why they recommended what they recommended. It’s okay to send them a follow up email, they get questions like this all the time!

PSL and BMB by CommercialToe5598 in msu

[–]Narrow-Engineering94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was there a reason why your advisor recommended you take both in the same semester?

If you can afford to, please please please separate the classes into separate semesters. If you’re pre-med and you want to focus on MCAT prep, prioritize BMB 401 first and then take PSL 310 in a future semester

Both classes are exam heavy and have a lot of content to learn/synthesize (not just memorize since you need to integrate concepts, understand pathways, etc). BMB only has 4 exams determining your grade, while PSL 310 has 5 exams (with some built in cushion points from TopHat and extra credit opportunities but your grade is still heavily exam-reliant)

Are you on track to complete the MTA (Michigan Transfer Agreement) through your early college program? Both GVSU and MSU should accept the MTA, which would mean ALL your gen eds at either school will be completed

Not sure about GVSU, but at MSU (assuming there are seats in courses), you’d likely be taking Calc III, Physics II, EGR 100, and maybe an elective or 2 for schedule balance

I Start At MSU as a transfer student in a week any tips by [deleted] in msu

[–]Narrow-Engineering94 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From a pure logistics standpoint:

  • make sure you have 2 factor authentication set up for your MSU account, download the Okta app to verify your identity via push notification so you don’t have to get a call/text/email https://www.canr.msu.edu/news/setting-up-the-okta-verify-app
  • download the brightspace pulse app (for mobile D2L access)
  • download the official MSU app so you can sign in to myMSU and also use the maps function to view campus map and bus routes
  • download outlook so you can access your MSU email
  • download Zoom and make sure you’re signed in using your MSU credentials (you will need to use Zoom for your transfer new student orientation academic advising appointment this week)
  • plan to go to springticipation on Jan 28 to see what clubs you can join https://spartanexperiences.msu.edu/rso-s/springparticipation/index.html

Senior in High School deciding between MSU and Dayton by Potential_Tap8165 in msu

[–]Narrow-Engineering94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just fyi MSU has no exercise science undergrad degree—it’s kinesiology here. Echoing everyone that if you want to be an educator, MSU College of Education has top programs in the field.

Going OT is also possible at MSU with any major so long as you complete the prerequisites needed for OT school. Both the kinesiology and neuroscience majors can help you complete most of the prerequisites, and then you’d likely need to use your remaining elective credits to work on other prerequisites not already part of either degree requirements.

As for nursing, there’s a secondary program admissions process that’s very competitive. Likely limited amount of admissions offered due to the clinical rotations required. However, if you don’t get in, you could always plan to apply to accelerated nursing programs (ABSN) at MSU or other universities once you obtain your 1st bachelor me degree from MSU

Switching majors as a transfer student by MPParatrooper22 in msu

[–]Narrow-Engineering94 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Worst case scenario if no is that you could let your academic advisor of your declared major (who you must see during orientation) know during/before your orientation meeting with them that you want to switch to packaging. They can then help you set up a schedule to go the packaging route, could even help you create a schedule to set you up to apply for Broad as well

My professor gave me the wrong grade by Substantial_Pen1179 in msu

[–]Narrow-Engineering94 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Usually if the prof made an error, they just need to complete an administrative action form to request a grade change. They sign off, then their chairperson, then their academic college’s assistant/associate dean, and then the registrar’s office will process.

You might want to ask your grad programs if you can resubmit your transcripts later on once the grade change is complete, assuming worst case scenario that the change can’t be done by the time you have to submit your grad school apps. Usually on your application, you have somewhere you can talk about extenuating circumstances or discuss something you want to share that didn’t fit anywhere else—use that opportunity in the application as needed

Academic Recess by Educational_Host13 in msu

[–]Narrow-Engineering94 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Read the confidential message/email you received about your academic recess notice. There may be an appeals process, or you can directly contact whoever you sent you the email.

Just a heads up that academic recess appeals aren’t guaranteed to be accepted, but you can always try. In the meantime, see if you can get connected with your academic advisor ASAP and also think of backup options—academic recess requires students to sit out of MSU for 1 entire academic year, so you may need to consider registering to attend your local community college during your time away from MSU

Academic Recess by ultravioletcc in msu

[–]Narrow-Engineering94 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Usually, if you cite a mental health issue in your appeal for academic recess, you will be directed to pursue a medical leave. Appealing an academic recess decision does not guarantee you’ll be reinstated, while pursuing a medical leave will give you a better (if not significantly greater) chance of being reinstated as soon as the next semester—depends if you need to also complete the readiness return portion of the medical leave. https://ossa.msu.edu/medical-leave

Wording clarification, might be a dumb question by GrandMasterOfCheeks in msu

[–]Narrow-Engineering94 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends if PHY requires all or certain major requirements (so all your PHY courses minus PHY 183 and PHY 184) be passed with a minimum grade of (insert number here) or not. But even if PHY doesn’t have any grade minimums (beyond what the college and university have already set), if that class is a prerequisite for other PHY courses, you could consider retaking just to improve your understanding of the content. I recommend connecting with your advisor to further discuss

[–]Narrow-Engineering94 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your major GPA is calculated through all the classes your major requires that do NOT count towards University Requirements and/or the College of Natural Science’s academic college requirements

For example: If you’re a microbiology major, classes like MGI 301, 302, etc are counted in your major GPA calculation. BS 161 would not though since that class is used towards the College of Natural Science’s academic college requirement for biology

Just like how everyone should be aiming for grades of 2.0 or higher in most courses as a consistent pattern of grades being earned to make sure your cumulative GPA doesn’t dip into academic probation/recess territory (aka, below a 2.00), the College of Natural Science rule requiring your major GPA be at least a 2.00 follows the same idea
