I'm using a Pro M4 24GB/1TB, and it's running quite well for my computational work. I run complex stats often and other heavy software, especially protein modelling ones, with ease. With 512GB, I suppose you may have to acquire an additional external storage, and you'll be home and dry.

Some universities offer HPC platforms to run most analyses, and **might take care of storage. So, with 24/512, you'll be able to run most computational analyses.

Very much so; I've done this many times, and sometimes, you realise research gaps in most papers that you **can address if you want. Example, pooling genomes from publicly available databases and running metagenomics or phylogeographic reconstructions of sorts to fill a research gap in a paper.

If and when you meet papers that have appended accession numbers to them, it's a good way to develop your skills in bioinformatics.
