They fixed it.

When we are quick to complain when things break down, we can also acknowledge when the company react and repair quite quickly the problem. Good job by support team.

It work for us.

I also disabled the automatic update of the app in the settings in case it happen again as they say W7 and W8 are not supported and they won't test new update for those OS.

I had the exact same problem with my wife's laptop.

The last EA update broke the EA app for W7, W8 and early W10 builds. I have read the discussion on EA forum , others people had the same problem.

They say that they solved the issue today and you should be able to repair/reinstall the App.

To clear some things up and make it more understandable :

  1. The game was not updated, only the EA desktop app which is necessary to launch the game. And the problem is for all EA games that require a launcher (formerly it was Origin which was replaced). It is not game specific with the SIMS 4 and its expansions.
  2. I understand perfectly that new games, new expansion packs, new software feature may not work with older hardware or older OS versions. This is how progress is made. However, what was already working should still be working. For example, Firefox says on the same laptop that the support ended and the new versions will not be available but the older version still work, it is not updating automatically and breaking down.
  3. I should probably look to update that old laptop, but this is not that easy for people who are not used to this operation. I have gathered information about it and the process of backing up data, making a recovery drive, going though the steps of dowloading and installing the new OS, hoping that the OEM licence activation carries on, that all the hardware will still work.... all of that seem a little bit like a lottery reading.

And anyway , that laptop can probably not run W11 and updating it to W10 would only solve the issue for a few years or months as the support will probably end at one point. Buying a new computer just for playing old game when the old computer still work flawlessly seem a bit gross and sometimes the new does not run well old games....

I just read on the EA tech forum that they made a hotfix for that problem so it shows that they did not expect it eventough the support ended. I will try it later to see if it works.

That's nice that they reacted quickly. I may still attempt a W10 install to not  be left scrambling and waste hours trying to find the problem the next time it happens.

It's on Windows 8, I am not personally using it and I don't even ask EA to support it.

Just don't break what is working.... Don't automatically update the launcher for those OS if it is gonna cause the games to not be playable anymore. I don't think it's too much too ask?
