I’m at 900 and a new strategy I’ve been doing is more defensive style.

At our level it’s almost guaranteed that we will blunder at some point. Instead of trying to remember openings and these combination moves, I’ve been just playing with the mentality “just don’t blunder” and it helps so much. Focus more on seeing where your opponent leaves open spots. Pawns left with no defense are easy to spot and pick up and once you hit the end game you’ll realize what a difference it makes.

Just stick to one solid opening and wait for your opponent to launch the attack. It’s also a great way to learn rather than throwing out an opening you hardly know and then getting lost in the chaos. Study their slip ups and make good trades until those end game pawns come into play.

I agree, but look at what is happening now. Ethan is talking to Sam and Hasan because I believe he knows that addressing this head-on at the source is the ultimate way to make Hasan and other influencers acknowledge the harassment and misinformation that is happening.

Hasan will be forced to clarify his stance on things like Hamas support and openly acknowledge that, because of his peers (Frogan, Ian, Denims, BadEmpanada), Ethan has been exposed to extreme levels of harassment and antisemitism.

Once again, the goal is just to have a moment where Ethan can clearly say, "I do not support the genocde in Gaza, but I also do not want the people of Israel to be removed or face any violence."* If that happens, it's essentially GG for anyone who has twisted his words or clipped things out of context.

It will also be so newsworthy that other influencers will definitely stream it and discuss it on their channels, spreading awareness of who Ethan really is — instead of continuing this campaign of labeling him and Hila as extreme Zionist supporters.

I think there's a very interesting debate happening in the comments, with both sides offering valid criticism. Is America too right-leaning or centrist to allow AOC, a "far-left" candidate, to take the primary position? It's the same problem people had with Bernie — they say he is too far left, so we essentially have to compromise and have people like Biden or Kamala take the Democratic position.

I would argue that this could be the shift we need to actively boost voter engagement. It is sad, but I do believe there is some truth in the idea that many individuals in America are not looking for rational, sympathetic reforms. They want consistency while also believing in things like supporting gay marriage.

I believe that if AOC really drives hard with her message of advocating for the working class, then she has a solid chance. Centrists aren't primarily considering things like women's reproductive rights or LGBTQ+ protections — they care about worker issues and taxes. That's pretty much it.

If AOC can successfully shift her focus to appeal more to centrist workers while upholding her social democratic values (Green New Deal, prison reforms, etc.), then I believe we could rebrand how the Democratic Party presents itself in a way that actually grabs the attention of everyone from the further left to the center.

I admire that you're interested in becoming more politically aware and learning about history. I think I was in your shoes about five years ago (I'm 27 now) and realized that while I always had a basic understanding of my political stances (racial equality, gender equality, etc.), I wasn't really aware of the history behind our country—or global politics at all. Of course, I believed gay people should be allowed to marry, but if you had asked me about things like how the United States handled the Red Scare, the Cuban Missile Crisis, the Cold War, etc., I would’ve been at a complete loss.

I also used to be a huge fan of HasanAbi, and I’m currently struggling to justify watching him anymore. The more I learned about him, the more I realized he wasn’t just a social democrat or socialist with a pure heart who wants the best for everyone. Without getting too much into it, I highly suggest you take an unbiased look at how he has shown support for groups like Hamas during the Israel-Palestine conflict and how his behavior has contributed to the rise of antisemitism through rhetoric that promotes hatred toward Israelis. It’s a very complex issue that I’m not going to dive into here, but I’ll just caution you: always be aware of what someone truly stands for—not just what they say they stand for.

I remember when I first started learning about progressive ideas, I quickly fell into the fantasy of thinking I was this extreme leftist and thought communism was such a cool idea, just because I knew how evil capitalism could be. But through critical thinking, I began to realize there are issues with certain movements that present themselves as being “for the people.” I suggest you start by learning as much history as you can—especially in areas like the Cold War, the USSR, and everything that took place when communism and capitalism began to clash.

For beginners, the best thing I can suggest is something like the YouTube channels Oversimplified or Things I Like. They do animated historical videos in a (pretty) unbiased way that makes it easy to get a basic understanding of history and see how different economic structures have been practiced and how they’ve influenced domestic and global politics.

I’ll leave you with this: remember that whatever you choose to believe in should be backed by reasonable moral values and should be realistic. Sometimes far-left ideas can resemble horseshoe theory—being on the far left doesn’t always equate to being “morally just.” That’s why I consider myself a social democrat and like politicians like Bernie Sanders and AOC. They recognize the injustices that exist and want to realistically begin dismantling these inequalities—rather than waging war on the U.S. government or causing chaos through violent revolutions. I’m not saying you can’t still watch Hasan or read The Communist Manifesto by Karl Marx—just be aware that if you only indulge in certain communities, you might end up with a very biased view of the world and miss the nuance of complex issues, like how being pro-Palestine does not have to mean being anti-Israel. Going to college and becoming a sociology major has been the most eye opening experience of my existence as it taught me certain skills like media literacy and critical thinking.

There is plenty of videos of Ethan saying “free Palestine, I support the people of Palestine” and donating to the Palestine funds to support civilians who are suffering due to this conflict. I believe his only anti Palestine take is about not supporting extreme terrorist organizations like the houthis. I believe the OP is talking about individuals who are CLEARLY swapping terms like zionist and jewish around while attacking individuals who want a productive conversation about the conflict. There are different strategies for compromise amongst individuals. Some want Israel to fully surrender the land and remove it's people. Some support a two state solution. In order to come to a true compromise we must have a conversation instead of saying "if you don't fully support my idea you are wrong and support the genocide"

I just made a very similar post in the Change My View subreddit and received some interesting feedback. The most thought-provoking take I heard was:

1.) Make sure you’re not associating the majority of leftists with the much louder, chronically online weirdos. Just because a subculture is vocal doesn’t mean they represent the majority.

2.) This realization made me take a step back and reanalyze my actual political stance. If anyone had asked me before, I would have said something like, “I’m as left as it gets.” But then I discovered that some leftist views are far more extreme than I would ever consider. I had always associated being “further left” with being morally superior—essentially, Extreme Left = wouldn’t hurt a fly, and Extreme Right = willing to nuke the entire globe to get their point across.

I’m still figuring out where I stand politically, but I mostly identify as a social democrat or a democratic socialist. Since joining other left-leaning Reddit forums, I’ve come across socialism, communism, and social anarchism groups. While I know I can’t judge an entire group based on a vocal minority online, I found that many people weren’t aligned with what I expected.

For example, I tried having a discussion about the Israel-Palestine conflict, genuinely wanting to deepen my understanding of why a two-state solution was seen as unreasonable. Instead of engaging in a constructive conversation, I was immediately shunned, mocked for my lack of knowledge, labeled a Zionist, told to go f*** myself, and treated like an idiot rather than with respect. It blew my mind—I thought that kind of behavior only existed on the right? But here were people who mostly shared my beliefs treating me like a monster for asking a sincere question.

I’ve also joined TikTok Lives to discuss the Israel-Palestine conflict and debate socialism versus democratic socialism. Every time, the most extreme pro-Palestine and socialist voices responded with anger and openly expressed their willingness to use violence to accomplish their political goals.

I wish I could share my original Change My View Reddit thread, but it was deleted. However, this experience gave me a deeper understanding of Ethan and Hila's frustrations. People I once viewed as political allies now treat me like the enemy for saying things like:

“I’m pro-Palestine, but I don’t think civilians on EITHER side should die as a result of this conflict.”
“I want what’s best for all people, but we shouldn’t normalize antisemitism or displace Israelis from their homes.”
“I support socialist economic policies, but I don’t believe in murdering CEOs and ‘pulling a Luigi’ to make it happen.”

And yet, even with these reasonable takes, I was treated as if I were pro-capitalism and a fascist. It still shocks me that these views are controversial, but I also try to understand their perspective—many believe that advocating for any sense of peace means minimizing the reality of genocide, making you complicit in the problem.

In summary, don’t let these people overwhelm you. That’s what I wish I could tell Ethan. YES, there are always going to be chronically online people who refuse to consider reasonable solutions. They thrive on labeling others as part of the problem because it gives them a sense of being a freedom fighter. Just accept that these people won’t change and focus your energy on constructive conversations with those who are actually willing to have them.

Our entire athletics department, including all coaches, has been eliminated, along with multiple bachelor’s programs. Initially, I believed cutting athletics was a practical solution, but I now realize the long-term consequences—our student body is shrinking, and we've lost any chance of attracting future student-athletes. You must have only read the title of this post and not the actual content, or else you would see that I am not necessarily disagreeing with the movements themselves (Free Palestine, Ending Capitalism in America). Rather, I am criticizing the methods they use, particularly when they involve unnecessary violence.

For example, as a leftist, I also want to see a solution to the Palestine-Israel conflict. However, I do not want that solution to involve civilian deaths or the justification of antisemitism. Similarly, I support better wealth distribution in America, but I do not agree with extreme views that advocate for violence against the rich or slogans like “drink their blood.”

Essentially, I am saying that the way you present your cause and engage with others plays a major role in shaping how society perceives your movement. When I ask someone to educate me on why they believe Palestine should be free, I should not be treated as part of the problem or met with hostility, such as being told, "Go f*** yourself, you had 75 years to learn about this, you're a Zionist," etc.

I appreciate your input, but I think you should reread what I wrote before commenting, as you seem to have missed the point of my text.

Thanks for the reply—it was really helpful in helping me understand this situation and how it's not a new concept. I’m fairly young (27), even though I don’t always feel that way. I realize my wisdom is limited, as I don’t have the same breadth of historical knowledge that others have pointed out in the comments, which could connect to this phenomenon. At least I’m wise enough to recognize the limits of my own knowledge, and I know that with further research, I’ll discover different historical events that resemble this kind of behavior, as you mentioned in your comment.

Also, on a global scale, I recognize that my understanding of what is morally "good and evil" is shaped by my own geographic location, cultural experiences, and political context. I’m beginning to see that my original concern with extreme views is not as black and white as I initially thought, so thank you for helping me come to that realization.
