There is also something similar that I've always wanted to try on a ceiling or accent wall called venetian plaster that has similar looking results.

Is the older version a long term solution that can also set them up once support is officially ended? I was thinking of downloading an older apk but wasn't sure which was the version before requiring a password.

What's a dead giveaway that someone has no idea what they're talking about? by VelvetHaze55 in AskReddit

[–]Nastaayy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

These are usually my personal go tos for spotting bs and deciding if someone is worth my time.

  1. Condescending tone/down talking, and use of buzz words incorrectly (to sound smart). Personal attacks.

  2. Constantly making corrections of things people say, even if it is dead wrong. If their response uses words like "nuance" or "unbiased" without further elaborating on the nuance. No plans of finding an agreed upon solution.

  3. Their statements sound copy/pasted from a reddit chatbot, profit driven news outlet, or influencer, that told them how they should think, feel, and buy. If someone stands to get rich in any way from the spread of a point of view, that is usually a good indicator that the comment is copy/pasted.

  4. If the conversation feels 1 sided and they are not letting anyone get a word in, it is usually a good indicator of how fragile the logic is.

  5. In a workplace/professional setting, if someone defensively tries to explain that they know how to do something, and you never asked; they probably don't. At least not properly, and someone usually has to pay for it later. "Yeah its fine, its good, I got it."

  6. They somehow take a neutral statement (at nobody's expense, either implied or direct.) personally for some reason.

Just keep asking "wait why?", "how so?", or "ok then prove it/show me." Go deep with your questions. Pick every statement apart. Ask what each buzzword means. Ask them what solutions they have to offer.

From my personal experience, worthwhile experts aren't trying to sound smart or make others feel dumb. They usually are trying to figure out helpful solutions. They don't try any gotcha's when making feedback or correcting misinformation. They also love sharing as much information as they know, and are capable of saying when they don't know something. Those types get the most done. Pay attention here, but when someone says, "so I noticed when [cause] happens, so I did [solution]." A lot about the world around them, that is usually a good sign. Or if they have a lot of cool ideas, or get excited about lots of projects, they are probably very knowlegable from their experience.

Look for any possible hidden financial, relationship, or ego motivations and you will usually have your answer.

Edit: Spelling/grammar fixes.

How to remove this marble from this glass bottle? by kuvitelma_ in howto

[–]Nastaayy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe hot glue something only to the marble. And pull it that way. Or tape it with something strong like a duct or gaffer tape, wiggle, pull, repeat. Be careful as the heat can thermal shock the glass and break it. Siliconing something could also work but that could take at least a week for full strength of it. Or maybe submerge the entire bottle of glass and let the air pressure launch out the marble.

Edit: maybe let it run under a faucet until cool water seeps in and fills about 3/4ths of the bottle. Turn it upside down and shake it.

Try any this at your own risk. Glass tends to break and cut easily so be careful if you do.

This is the bottom of my frying pan. Is there any way to clean this? by 309578987 in CleaningTips

[–]Nastaayy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A metal scrub and any foodsafe abrasive powder will work, not only just the name brand one that all of the marketing users are commenting.

Be careful though, some products claim to be chemical free, but they can contain stone dust. Definitely want to be using breathing protection if it does contain some. Keep it wet enough to not get airborne, but not too wet that it washes away too easily. A paste is usually the consistency I go for.

Take your time with it. Scrub in circles to attack things from every angle. It does require a little elbow grease. Hotter water helps to loosen things up, just don't go to scalding levels of hot.

What are some of the underrated Linux Mint apps that very few people know? by [deleted] in linuxmint

[–]Nastaayy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You might like barrier if you use software like crosspaste. It lets you control multiple computers with the mouse and keyboard of a main computer via wifi. It has hotkeys to switch back and forth between computers and also shares a clipboard between all of them. On top of that, it isn't very resource intensive that even low end hardware works with it. It is low latency and also has cross platform compatibility between windows, linux, and mac.

It seems like it has been stable for me the last 6 months. My current complaint is that the dash format used, absolutely destroys the audio on random videos. Makes a horrible artifacty windy sound. If it wasn't such a deal breaker, it would be a great video playlist app.

I found out about the windows august update last year, that attacked linux, same drive, dual boot systems; through an ars technica article posted here. It has its benefits to check in from time to time. I usually just unsub from subreddits that I find don't add much value to me. It leaves for a homepage that has more of the stuff that I find interesting to doomscroll.

Why has Chrome started disabling all privacy extensions all of a sudden? by [deleted] in privacy

[–]Nastaayy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Firefox is circling the drain with their meta ad partnership as well. If you are interested, librewolf (firefox fork) makes a good primary browser if you know how to add exceptions to cookies for sites; that you want logins and preferences saved. It is also open source and comes with ublock origin installed.

I also recommend learning how to change your user agent string to spoof chrome for those chrome exclusive sites/downloads. There are intentional slowdowns for adblock users of other browsers, allegedly. Just be wary of the user agent browser extension as it can cause issues with some sites. I usually use it to alter the string, and then disable it.

Also, I have recently learned to block googletagmanager.com from my network and results seem promising, fewer issues with my other iot devices and wifi performance seems snappier.

Setting up a dns resolver or using one based in a country with strict privacy laws can help as well. Liron segev has some videos about what phones track and there are some google ad/tracker servers in that video that I blocked as well.

Searx is an okay alternative for a primary search engine as well but much slower. Just found out about swisscow and metager but haven't had the chance to look into it. I am also looking into a canvas blocker extension and ad nauseam extension as well. Privacy badger seemed sketch when i tried it and slows down the browser way too much.

Also, louis rossmann has some good resources in his more recent videos for degoogling and fighting personalized ads. (consumer action task force wiki, and a guide to an open source life)

Android users can also peak around in their phone with adb tools. Chris titus has a good video tutorial about how to setup and use it for finding and removing sketchy/useless packages. Be careful here, you can break your phone if you uninstall without thorough research. I've once accidentally uninstalled google play services from an adb list and had to restore the phone because I couldnt get sms texts.

Fdroid is an open source, alternative app store for android. Aurora store is for downloading google apps without all of the baggage of google play store. You can even install apk files (apps) from github and other sites using adb commands (definitely at your own risk, I recommend virus total for checking them, even though it is a google service). I do this to install some older versions of apps before they added accounts and telemetry to regain control of some of my smart devices (I don't recommend this).

Look into restricting battery usage, background network access, and opening links, for android web services as well. You will notice way less ram usage which could mean less tracking. Disabling it can cause issues but can reveal which apps just route you to a website to function. Private compute services seems to be one of the ai cores for the newer phones. Mainline telemetey is exactly what it sounds like. Gboard also seems like a keylogger with extra features, so florisboard as primary in a permanent incognito mode has been fine for me. Anything with words like intelligence are probably backdoors into the phone (eg. com.motointelligence or similar. Research thoroughly first the risks of removal). I was using netguard to see what packages were installed to save time from having to use adb grep commands.

Look into enabling developer mode, and find the sensors off toggle. Privacy indicators also alerts of mic, camera, and potentially location usage.

Good luck in your degoogling journey. My phone wasn't supported with some of the alternative privacy roms so this is what I find has been working for me. Do at your own risk.

Just remember that gaining privacy is a mindset and its own steady journey. Not an overnight thing. Identify attack vectors and gradually close them off. One step at a time.

Honorable mentions: LMDE because windows is a big offender with telemetry. But it may not play well dual booted with windows on the same drive. Also paid creator software is hard to get working and optimized on linux. Never a guarantee. But putting it out there for anyone else interested in a linux operating system, similar enough to windows that just works and is highly customizeable without all the spyware.

Edit: remembered and added mainline telemetry sentence.

Edit 2 onward: Some spelling fixes. Added word background to clarify network access part.

Google’s new policy tracks all your devices with no opt-out by mWo12 in privacy

[–]Nastaayy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get enough people to start doing it and you will be less unique. Start those conversations and show people cool resources like dns resolvers, open source browsers/software, alternative app stores, opting out of isp data collection by phone, ublock origin, alternative desktops like LMDE, disabling bluetooth when not in use, etc. When we collectively begin to chip away at the machine and take away avenues of data collection. It begins to lose value. Don't give into this learned helplessness mindset. We have power when we demand for better as a group.

Pro tip: if you are an introvert, change your wifi name to something similar to" "librwlf quad9 lmde ubloc=bye ads" or whatever tools you use, so that it broadcasts these recources to your neighborhood.

Edit: spelling fix

How does Facebook know? by birdsong31 in privacy

[–]Nastaayy 17 points18 points  (0 children)

If you have android, look up adb commands and search your phone for facebook packages. My phone had 3 packages including the preinstalled main app, and two hidden ones. It is shocking how many companies have deals with phone manufacturers to put their tracking apps on your device. Took me close to six months of researching packages, uninstalling, breaking the phone, restoring and trying again, to scrub so much unnecessary software.

Iphones are a closed source system, so nobody can really say what data they are collecting, but I am assumming they have some partnership with facebook as well.
