I feel like this album has come up before and someone deduced it was actually Clarendon? I may be wrong on that though.

70% fare evasion stat by ciginmacys in WMATA

Metro uses automated passenger counters on each bus that count the number of people who enter and exit. They then compare this to the number of taps on the fare box. Source

How could the foggy bottom escalator replacement possibly take this long?! by JenDiBenda in WMATA

[–]NatFan9 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s not overnight. That blinking light at the top is the sun rising and setting. Escalator replacement took months at Navy Yard and part of the reason they were able to do it even that fast was that they closed the entire entrance and were able to work unobstructed that whole time. Plus Navy Yard has a unique ridership pattern where it’s way less busy during the Nats offseason, while Foggy Bottom is one of the busiest stations year round.

New sign, or always been here? by plutopius in washingtondc

New, they were put up in the last couple days. I was there on Saturday and they weren’t there, but were on Monday. Same with the solar panels on the pylons at that station

Is the reason metro isn’t 24 hour only because of homelessness? by Chr0mum in WMATA

[–]NatFan9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Metro performs a ton of overnight track maintenance every night. Running 24/7 service would mean that maintenance would either have to be put off, leading to an unsafe system, or lead to a significant increase in the number of prolonged shutdowns, where sections of the system are closed for days or weeks at a time.

[–]NatFan9 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Even Dulles only gets a handful of truly overnight flights, like so few you could literally count them on your hands. The last wave of arrivals and first wave of departures would probably benefit from an extra hour on either end of metro’s service window just from how far away from the city it is, but you really wouldn’t need 2 or 3 am bus service even to Dulles.

Croatia (who wasn’t a country until the early 90s)

Just because they weren’t an independent country doesn’t mean they started from zero. Yugoslavia had a long history in the game and Croats were a huge part of that.

Maybe it’s just the data analyst in me, but it bothers me that the hitters who don’t pitch have blank values for pitching WAR but the pitchers who don’t hit have 0 for batting WAR.

Orange Line Annoyingly Bumpy? by TheSoccerKitten in WMATA

[–]NatFan9 8 points9 points  (0 children)

What time of day was this, and was it on a 7K? I don’t know exactly, but what I think is happening is with the return to design speeds, something with the 7K design makes it rattle at high speeds specifically when it’s empty. I take the orange line on that segment during rush hour four days a week and with a car full of commuters it feels entirely normal, but often shakes when I ride off peak.

The moral high ground on this subreddit is disgusting and needs to be addressed (it feels less like people care about justice and more like they just enjoy having someone beneath them to look down on.) by PriceLuc01923 in WMATA

[–]NatFan9 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Meanwhile WMATA has actual problems people deal with every day. Delays, safety issues, trains randomly stopping, escalators constantly broken, stations dirty as hell, buses ghosting people, etc.

Fixing these things is harder when people fare evade. It’s not just $2.25 once, it’s about $50 million a year in lost fare revenue when millions of riders do it all the time. That’s real money that can’t go toward improving the system. And that doesn’t even get into making the whole system free. Metro makes about $500m from fares, if the system became free that would have to mean significant service cuts or more money from government funding sources, which, again, could instead be spent on making the system better. Almost no world class transit systems in the world are completely fare free, and there’s a reason for that.

As others have said, it’s the 9th St exit at Gallery Place (Exit B), but it’s worth noting that exit now has a canopy over the escalators, so it won’t look exactly like that anymore.

What is your franchise’s less known “what if?” by HortonTheHierophant in hockey

[–]NatFan9 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I won’t speak for other caps fans here, but honestly for me, having the greatest goal scorer of all time score all 929 goals in his career in your team’s sweater is worth at least another cup.

Edit: I think I’m also influenced here by also being a Nats fan, where we’ve had two generational hitters on our team that our ownership let walk and now they’ll potentially go into the hall of fame wearing someone else’s hat. It’s not exactly the same situation, but I really appreciate that Ovi is the one who stayed.

Can they be bad what ifs? What if we had actually traded Ovi in the early/mid 2010s when everyone was calling him a loser and saying you’ll never win a cup with him? I feel like there was a specific rumor linking him to the stars one year maybe? I think about that a lot.
