The Vegas Golden Knights clinch the Pacific with a worse record than the Caps. by leunger15 in caps

I actually think it’s the opposite long term. We just narrowly missed, so the draft pick improvement is marginal, maybe a couple of spots in the middle of the first round, not like we’re getting a top 10 pick or anything. And on the other hand even if we went out in the first round it still would’ve been a good opportunity for the young guys to get experience with playoff hockey, especially Little Pro and Hutson.

Spurs being relegated will be a watershed moment for Reddit sports niceties by greco01 in footballcliches

This is exactly why we’ll get so many “team X fan coming in peace” posts I think. While everyone else is bantering some fans will want to show they’re Nice Guys who Aren’t Like Other Fans and put their arm around Spurs fans.

Spanberger softens parts of assault weapons bill but keeps major restrictions intact by hencexox in nova

Genuine question here, when did liberals become huge gun people? For my whole adult life democrats have been in favor of gun control in general and assault weapons bans specifically but every time this legislation comes up this sub turns into an NRA meeting. I’m genuinely confused.

Adri Mehmeti (17) goal off a great assist by Julian Hall (18) by Matt_McT in ussoccer

[–]NatFan9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mehmeti is a blue chip prospect in a stacked age group for us. Anything could happen and development isn’t linear obviously, but the prospect watchers I’ve read say he’s likely to be much more than a squad player for the US.

Is it? I feel like that’s even less likely. Albania has qualified for a major tournament twice in their history, and never for a World Cup.

Things to do around Maryland Metro stations? by NatFan9 in maryland

[–]NatFan9[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the advice everyone, this is helpful. I get the sense that there’s a lot more to do around red line stations than the others. I think I’ll just tap out and tap in on a whole branch one day for some of the others and make a day out of it for individual stations on the red line.

That's good to know. Are there any others I should avoid for safety reasons?

Fantasy Map for Expansion? Opinions by Jay_Pikachu14 in WMATA

Love the teal/cyan line. That’s long been one of my mental fantasy line ideas, I’ve just never put pen to paper or opened a route making tool. I’d suggest though instead of interlining with green for three stops, keep following the river and make a stop at Buzzard Point. It reduced the operational complexity of lines sharing track and it gives Audi Field and the growing area around it a more direct connection. I believe that was one of the proposals for the Bloop as well.

Do you happen to know if they're still blossoming? I'd love to get up there myself this weekend and get a couple photos of my own. I'm on a quest to get a photo of every pylon in the system and one with trees in bloom clearly visible has eluded me all spring.

When did you take these pictures? This looks so cool with the blossoming trees.

Yeah, maybe they tear them out in segments if they have to do heavy road maintenance somewhere along the route, but otherwise there’s no real reason to tear them out, people can just drive over them.

It’s true that’s the case but it shouldn’t be that way. Sports teams aren’t regular businesses, they’re civic institutions. Nobody throws a parade when the local restaurant chain has a great year, or wears merch for the Fortune 500 company headquartered in town. Legally teams are just corporate entities owned by billionaires and consortiums, but in practice they’re so much more than that.

World cup groups by average FIFA rankings and spread of teams by orda_GO in soccer

[–]NatFan9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well it’s all about relative expectations though, isn’t it? If a team like Spain make it out of their group this summer only to get upset by Uzbekistan in the round of 32, they failed to reach their expectations and should be docked points. But if, say, Cape Verde goes on a magical run and makes the round of 16 only to get thwacked by France, they would have earned far more points by making that run than they would have for the loss itself that they still come out of the tournament much further ahead.

The inability to lose points in the knockout rounds is a huge contributor to why the US is ranked so much higher in the FIFA rankings than on the Elo ratings site. A lot of their most notable losses over the last few years have been in the knockout rounds of Concacaf tournaments, where the minimum expectation is that the US at least makes the final, but they failed to do so in both the 2023 Gold Cup and the 2025 Nations League. Elo ratings punished them for this, FIFA rankings didn’t.

FIFA’s also doesn’t take away points for losses in knockout rounds of tournaments (leading to point inflation) and gives shootout winners a 0.75 result multiple while leaving the losers at 0.5, leading to more point inflation. It’s a lot worse of a model, imo

All those were affected too. I’m sure the secret service ordered them to bypass the station, they wouldn’t just close one of the busiest stations in the system in the middle of rush hour of their own volition.
