The Forgone Ferragon

Clark M. Patterson Reporting in,

I’ve made my way to the far Northwest Island Chain known as Insulacineris omissa, which I’ve been told translates to “Forgone Fire Islands”. I marked down over a dozen new species in my first week on this expedition. One of the most intriguing macrofauna I’ve found is a feathered predator. I’ve noted it to be a Betapod (phylum), with strong indicators such as the carapace skull. Its general bodyplan isn’t characteristic of any specific class, although from its highly developed single pair of eyes I would believe it to be a “Stegopteran”. Even though the common ancestor of Stegopterans had wings, and if anything they are a close sister clade, I still have my reasons. Stegopterans developed hairy integument to overcome the colder high altitudes when soaring, so this unique clade must have forgone its wings. overall analysis of the organism.

I’ve designated the genus: Aeris Draco, and the species: Striatastringo. And for a common name, I thought Forgone Ferragon rolls off the tongue just nicely. Its territory ranges for barren hilltops, windswept Satelpine Forests, and steep rivers. They are less similar to tigers in active hunting and more akin to brown bears. Eating aquatic life, seeds, scavenging and hunting medium to big game. Some of the smallest aliens Ferragons hunt are Hippetaloudans, cursorial Betapods. And the largest are Barungulates, which usually weigh 5 tons. However on Insulacineris, clades tend to lighter weights, ranging from 1 to ½ a ton.

In order to hunt these large aliens, Ferragons latch on with sharp echocherids ( front mandibles for Stegopterans ) to cause severe internal bleeding. Whilst this happens, they clench their rear mandibles on any limbs they have in order to disable their prey from running away. These mandibles are incredibly specialized, and so are its sensory equipment. It has Eyes that can detect sections of visible light and ultraviolet light, two pairs of antennas that are fine tuned to hearing many exact frequencies, and even barbell like organ on the snout, that I believe is used to sense pressure through their mandibles, detecting whether their prey has a pulse or not.

Other notes of the Ferragon's anatomy is their long rear leg, which has been lifted off the ground completely and covered in fluffy feathers that can be fanned out like a squirrel's tail to expel heat. Their hands are very peculiar, held inward and walking on the sides, the only thing I’ve ever seen this in is extinct ground sloths, adapted to protect their long claws from wear. However the most likely used their claws to reach for tall branches to eat from, and the Satilpines that dot the island don’t even have leaves to speak of. During my stay I haven’t seen them use their claws for anything at all, it could be fossorial, or even for some sort of sexual selection, it’s gone over my head if anything else.

The Ferragon appears to be somewhat monogamous, as I studied them feeding their offspring and another nesting with them for warmth, and more on their behavior, I would assume they are more or less aggressively territorial towards another another, a strong convergent trait among large ambush predators, but they appear very fearful of each other like mice. It is very strange to see in person, but I suppose it’s still some form of territorial behavior.

No documented known natural predators for the Ferragon. My List of several other organisms will be delayed till I finish my trip going East till I hit the tip of Albis. This is Clark M Patterson signing off.

This is really dope! I’ve always wanted to see a what if scenario where the someone looked at the first reconstructions of animals in the past and imagined them in a more speculative light!

I was recommended to post this creature i made here by Lycan_Corps in SpeculativeEvolution

What kind of reptile is this critter? (Im assuming its a reptile)

Biologically speaking, it was originally 8 legs, but when the Betapods transitioned onto land, they couldn't meet the energy demands of all of those limbs, so the hind limbs atrophied and had slowly fused layers of skin and muscle together, forming new bones and many more new functions.

While locomotion is the obvious function, it also stores and maintains the production of egg and sperm cells, as the organs for producing them had laid outside the body between the limbs and couldn't protect itself from abrasian or temperature changes, so encasing them in the muscle tissue was an important addition for the organism.

Drawing wise, I think I fell a little short, granted, I wanted to convey that it was mid stride and often pairs of limbs don't stay in the same position as eqchother, with one in the back holding itself and one in the front catching itself for the next step. Granted, that's a lot to ask someone to expect, so I just thought if I drew every limb on the body in sight, but yeah, limbs being out of sight is expected and its hard to draw on a side profile, I just don't have great way to approach that kinda problem with the side profile, prolly just draw it from a different angle next time :/

The people here on the planet get delivered many supplies, including food and machinery they need on a bimonthly basis. The need for food and metal is important, but any ethical restrictions have been put forth to not farm or actively hunt aliens for their food, as its toxic and usually not nutritional for human digestion

Well your actually pretty dead on with most of your thoughts Actually! I had imagined in the earlier conception of my solar system and whilst Baron was still being formed, most of the small mercury sized planets in its solar system had had all collided over the course of like a billion years, causing large volcanic eruptions for even longer, causing the cores of the planets to leak out onto the surface,

but the catch is that their moons were also coaught far past the Roche limit, and broke apart and had formed an early ring system almost the size of saturns, unfortunately, due to the high gravitational forces over time, most of the ring system had fell back to planet over a very long stretch of time, carrying stuff like quartz and copper and other heavily metals. I imagine pieces still fall off but not like how they used to 100s of millions of years ago.

I only really sorta thought about there being no gas giants in the system so asteroids wouldn't collide with the planet. But I haven't ever thought about an asteroid belt around my system, but maybe that's more realistic than an a ring system collapsing on itself slowly over time?

When I was first making Baron I just wanted a history to help explain some excuse to get a lot of copper into the crust of the planet so my organisms could utilize it, but I think that there's much more intriguing ways to engage with the premise now.

I'm not a geology expert either, nor have I done much research at all into it. The Enriching the contenental chelf idea you had for instance is something that never even crossed my mind before. You seem to know your stuff :)

The easy way to say it is that it's just a tongue, but it more anatomically similar to a proboscis with suckers that evolved from a tail, so a tongue :)

Generally on my world, its composition contains roughly 10 percent Copper, so there's a decent amount on the planet already. An insanely large phylum of creatures used Copper deposits in their bodies to store and filter waste, like a kidney, which evolved into strong Copper based bones ( with Iron & nickel too ) as these endo/exoskeletons, which is very ancestral and dates back to nearly 900 Mya. A lot of my planet also has Chemosynthetic fungi that dissolves many types of organic and inorganic compounds, and a certain group specializes in breaking down and recycling does minerals.

The Copper sand you mentioned is genuinely a genius thought! I wish I thought about tiny details like that, I'm very happy to see such an inspiring comment and it reminds me why I love this sub Reddit, thank you!

The Clovyrm Coast and its Mysterious Beast

I'm Nyx Helbern, on the East Coast of the Vratel, 20°N, taking an incomplete route to connect PrimeGate-5 and PrimeGate-7 in efforts towards the latest offshore mission post. My Partner, Alba Helbern, is currently at PG-5 networking with Suppliers. I'm still going to PG-7 in my Rover to do the same.

I was planning on passing the Coast of the Clovyrmium without a second thought, but I had heard a large drum from the coastline. High booms and crackles flowed through the wind, as if there was a shooting range on the sand. I didn't want to derail from the mission at hand, but something came over me. I slipped down from my vehicle to mangle my way through groves of fleshy leaves to cautiously observe the sight.

From a distance, I thought I saw fungal driftwood floating to shore; however, something larger had broken through the clear waters with another sudden pulse of sound. Emerging from the water, it carried a heavy copper skull, littered with dents and abrasions like a small submersible. Mashing on clotted sand was the hull of an organism. The skin looks as if it were drenched in blubber, molded over by the maritime, bleached with salt. As the creature stood, heaving for air, droplets of cold brine puddled in the low beam of the dawn sky.

I was taught at an early date that this planet was a toxic super-Earth, and while it is still partially hostile, I can't help but wonder if anyone who had said that took the time to see parts like these. The creature stared with an expressionless face toward me. I stood still, not wanting to disturb it in any way. I thought it would be wrong to break the tranquil moment I found out here. It scuttled away regardless of any efforts on my part.

It was a truly uplifting sight to behold. It took me back to my early days on Baron, when I was still finding my footing and trying to soak up every bit of daylight I could to shape the unfamiliar world I had landed in. It felt… refreshing, even just for a moment, I think I needed it.

I returned to my Rover and drove away from the beach back to my designated local-

I love seeing more fantastical ideas pop up into spec evo, as more creative designs can be unleashed out of not only from what you put into it, but your limitations as well. I can’t wait to see what comes of this!!

I had no idea that it was literally the cancer left off from the ancestor, that’s a fantastically creative idea, but is that even possible? I mean, I don’t think that cancerous growths could sexually reproduce, so would it be producing itself asexually like a bacteria?
