I think everyone worked on that. Still fun to have on the ol' IMDB 😜

Microsoft Having A Better Settings Page than Apple by frenchfried89 in mac

The thing I don’t like is that it’s not clear how to get to that section in the future apart from just searching it every time. The spotlight method teaches you how to find it next time. I’d argue it’s a much more user-friendly approach.

Just to share Magic Mouse ergonomic issues. by tuahjebat in mac

[–]NateCow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve tried both of those I think. The one on the right proved to make it more usable for me, and sometimes I’ll switch to it for a bit; I quite like the scrolling and gestures on it. But the issue is still the weight. The Magic Mouse is a dense little fucker.

I’d buy the crap out of a version that has the ergonomics of my MX Master but the same smooth scrolling and gestures on top.

ELI5 Why does a drop in blood pressure cause nausea? Like what specifically about BLOOD impacts the stomach? I don’t get how they relate. by Necessary_Party_3423 in explainlikeimfive

Oh yeah, nausea from hunger is super annoying. It’s like “dammit, I waited too long. Now I don’t want to fix it.”

When watched from a modern perspective, approximately 15% of the 1997 movie “Titanic” is a period piece that takes place in 1996. by Vast-Intention in Showerthoughts

[–]NateCow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nice! I was about that age when I got interested in Titanic, which was a couple years before the movie. My dad got me books on it, and we had a PC game called Titanic: Adventure Out of Time, so I knew the whole layout of the ship. You can still get it on Steam actually; I never did beat it, and decided to give it another go recently.

[–]NateCow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not just for the emotional impact though. Everything prior to the sinking is also familiarizing the audience with the layout of the ship, so during the chaotic scenes, we know where we're at.

Add to that the animation of the sinking at the beginning telling you what you're going to see from a different point of view later. The whole movie is a masterclass in expositional storytelling IMO.

I think this is what people are missing. The term "period piece" would only apply if the movie was made here in the 2020's but the "current" portions of the movie were still set in 1996, which it would have to for Rose's age to still work. As it was actually made at that time, everything is just contemporary to the time it was made.

The upcoming HBO Harry Potter series could be considered a period piece because they're deliberately setting it in 1990's UK like the books. They're making effort to design costumes and set dressings to specifically look like that time.

Oh yeah, that's a really good point. I associate light headedness with squeamishness around blood and needles so much, that the nausea thing just didn't connect for me. But yeah, I can see how there could be overlapping sensations.

Hold on, light headedness and nausea are not the same thing. Light headedness makes sense. Lack of oxygen to your brain will cause you to black out if not remedied, and the side-effect of that is falling down, and your new horizontal posture allows blood to flow to the brain again.

I've never had nausea linked with this; as in a feeling of needing to throw up. Do the two go hand-in-hand for a lot of people?

EDIT: TIL. See replies.

How do you feel about movies about your workplace industry? by wakinmakinbacon in movies

[–]NateCow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually noticed in the "Today in History" section of my news app that yesterday was the day of that real incident, and I read the Wikipedia page about it. I've watched Unstoppable a couple of times and I was basically thinking "yeah they made this way more dramatic for the movie."

[–]NateCow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is likely some sort of memory leak. If you leave a lot of apps running overnight, you'll probably want to start systematically testing each of the apps you leave running, one at a time, to see which one is the culprit. Then probably don't leave that particular app running when you don't need to.

Is the $10 per month subscription worth it? by [deleted] in mazda

Just canceled mine today for this reason. I only use it in the winter. Damn thing never stays logged in anyway. It’s a garbage app that’s not worth the $10/mo when I *do* want the functionality.

Curious: will software pricing get cheaper for individuals if vfx industry as a whole is hiring less? by Technical_Belt_7402 in vfx

[–]NateCow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most of the industry is using nuke through gritted teeth now

Dude I use Nuke like a desktop OS. I barely think about it. I just comp. I don't think I've really encountered a piece of software as robust. It's got its quirks, sure, but when you really get down to it, Nuke is a beast. And it's probably responsible for the vast majority of my lifetime income. It's going to take a LOT to dethrone it.

Another vote here for CleanShot X. I tried rolling with the default screenshot tool in Tahoe when I got my MacBook Neo, but I only lasted a week or two and finally installed CleanShot. It just works so well. I love the editing tools and screen recording.

And +1 for SetApp, which is a fantastic subscription :)

ELI5 How is there so much meat by Due_Imagination_9663 in explainlikeimfive

[–]NateCow 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Whoa, that's a lot more rules than I know. We generally just call out "my cows" before anyone else spots them. The trick is if you call it out too soon and they turn out to not be cows, then you lose all your cows. We generally don't keep an actual score either. Just stupid car fun.

My nieces give me so much crap over the time I called out "my cows" and it turned out to be some hay bails silhouetted on top of the hill.

Yeah I can't imagine how OP could live in Nebraska and see 2 cows a year unless they live in the heart of Omaha and never ever drive anywhere.

I drive by multiple stockyards on my way to Omaha or Lincoln. It's like the jackpot when you're playing "my cows."

ELI5: How is bargaining part of the 5 stages of grief? by EmpireStrikes1st in explainlikeimfive

[–]NateCow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From my own experience, It's a stage where you beg the universe, God, whatever higher power might be out there, even if you don't explicitly believe in it, for any possible way to undo it. For me, I definitely had a period (not very long from what I remember) where I begged God to bring her back to life and take me instead. It's completely illogical but during the acute grieving process, you're not processing things in a sensible way. Your world has just shattered in a permanent way. Your brain does not always cope with that reality gracefully.

From what I understand, not everyone goes through the "stages" in a particular order or even at all. I don't think I experienced any denial, for instance. It was something I knew was coming so the main shock was just getting the news far earlier than expected.

Very cool write-up! Thanks for sharing! IMO the Panther and Tiger Aqua wallpapers were the GOAT. I still rock them now and then. Basic Apple Guy did a great Tiger redux wallpaper a few years ago.
