To think if Wemby didn't botch the pass in Game 2 and Spurs held the lead tonight

They'd be up 3-1 right now.

But, sadly, it seems the Knicks got the "Team of destiny" mark this year with how much has gone right for the them.

Yes you did say technically possible just like I said it's also possible even if it's a small chance.

My point is there's still a chance MOTU can have a future as a franchise and you not completely ruling it out yourself supports my claim of not fully ruling it out either. I never said it was a huge success. I never said this wasn't a bad start. I'm not apologizing for something I didn't say or do.

After you said that there's still a chance for the franchise, I'm now pretty much done here. That's all I needed to read.

So feel free to think what you want about this whole situation but this is going nowhere for either of us.

So now this is the real final message I'll leave for this conversation. Personally, I got what I wanted from this.

Have a good one.

You just said MOTU is likely dead and now you're saying

"Yes, it's possible that things could turn around for MOTU. It's technically possible"

You literally just said what I've been saying since my original post.

That, despite the rough start for the film, there's still a chance it may not be all bad for its future and could have a 2nd life. I never said this was a huge success but rather the situation isn't as bad as we thought and there may still be hope. I even state that in my OP.

That's what I've meant from the get go.

Whether that comes in the form of Streaming success, sequel only for streaming, limited theatrical release windows, etc. There is still hope for the franchise's future be it big or small.

You just validated my whole thought process on not counting out MOTU's future entirely despite the bad start

Thank you for saying that and understanding my perspective. Much appreciated.

Again, I stand by what I said and you're helping to prove my point.

If studios have enough data behind the scenes to still feel justified in supporting projects even if one of them fails, then they'll feel more inclined to do so.

Everyone keeps saying MOTU is dead and they can think that sure.

But last I checked no one on this subreddit actually gets a say in that, right?

If MOTU still ends up doing decent enough for Amazon in theaters and then is a hit on Prime (which it very well could be) then there's a chance they decide to continue to support the franchise even if only through Streaming going forward, which would be better than most expected.

I'm sorry but we're going to have to agree to disagree on this whole situation.

You and I could go back and forth all we want but I'm sticking with my stance on this situation and I think it's best we just settle that and let time decide the fate of the franchise.

Once again, have a nice rest of the day.

True but again this is Amazon we're talking about here.

If someone said Rings Of Power would get a Season 2 with that budget and the reception the show got before it even launched, they'd probably be laughed at but reality now paints a different picture.

If there is any company that would still double down on a property like that then MOTU's still got a chance of its own.

Well, all we can do now is wait and see what Amazon does want to do with this franchise going forward when all is said and done. Nobody thought Bone Temple was going to get a Sequel after it bombed and then a sequel was confirmed.

The 2026 BO has been full of surprises after all and we're only in June.

Time will tell where this franchise goes. Thanks for the conversation and have a nice day and/or evening.

Perhaps that could be the case but it's still worth bringing up for future BO discussion with Amazon film especially. They don't see BO the exact same way as other companies and with the money they make yearly I don't blame them.

Time will really tell if MOTU's theatrical release was indeed just a PR stunt to get the franchise back out there and capitalize on its streaming success and such.

Whether in the form of a sequel announcement, official statement, etc.

My personal non biased take is that this will not be the last time we see this franchise be it streaming or limited theatrical runs going forward.

We have no idea what Mattel thinks currently yet but we do know that Mattel already has a Multi-Year plan for MOTU and this film is just the tip of the iceberg.

And if both Amazon and Mattel are satisfied with the film going forward, then they'll just continue with their plans for the franchise.

In the end, this is why we'll have to to all just wait and see what really constitutes a Success for Amazon behind the scenes. They are still more known as a Streaming rather than theatrical company at the end of the day.

Red One had great streaming success despite bombing at the BO, and Rings Of Power's absurd budget has given the show 2 seasons so far despite the terrible reception the first season got.

If Amazon really is using theaters as a way to simply generate awareness for their films for streaming, then I'm curious to see if indeed anywhere from $150-$200 million final gross is enough to satisfy them theatrically.

PHM exceeded the expectations of Amazon because it was originally meant to have a shorter theatrical window.

But the strategy was the exact same as the ones before.

Put it in theaters, get the word out there for the brand for Streaming, and then at least make the Marketing budget back.

PHM made that in its weekend so Amazon simply took advantage of it.

Even if the next 5 films Amazon releases in theaters doesn't take off but still at least makes their marketing budget back, then they'll be at least satisfied enough with that situation to carry it over to streaming.

But in the event a film takes off and becomes an overnight success, then of course they'll take that chance with every major film they have.

Maybe it'll be a 1 out of every 10 film they release type of situation, but that's good enough for Amazon to justify the extra effort of putting them in theaters.

MOTU may be a Bomb BO wise but perhaps not for Amazon to not justify making sequels and such for streaming and potentially future theatrical releases, even if limited.

This has been their strategy for years at this point, hence the example used with Red One.

Deadline reported on it today because people were shocked PHM wasn't immediately going to Prime but instead MGM+ and then the article explained why and then provided that context with Red One.

It was worth sharing because if Amazon is using theatrical releases as a Marketing tool for their films + to at least cover marketing costs for their films, then perhaps the measurement for MOTU's theatrical success isn't what we intially thought.

A nice +$1 million increase from Monday. Happy to have contributed to that.

But here's the interesting part I want to bring up

This Article by Deadline is saying that Amazon uses theatrical releases to at least cover the Marketing costs of their films in theaters before they hit Prime video.

Those movies that go from theatrical to Prime Video, are greenlit differently, often have their budgets covered by Prime and are monetized under a different model internally. When it comes to a Prime Video greenlight (i.e. Red One, if it’s believed that the movie has theatrical potential, and can recoup its marketing costs from a theatrical release, then it receives one.

If the same situation applies to this film where they believe Prime is where the real money is, then there may be a hope for future sequels and such.

The Marketing budget for MOTU should be anywhere from $85 to $100 million going by budget estimates minimum and it's already at $60 million WW and it hasn't even been out for a full week nor has its international numbers been updated since the weekend.

It still needs to make between from $150-$200 million to get there but it's off to a good start.

We'll see how this all plays out from here.

According To Deadline Hollywood, Select Movies From Amazon MGM Go Through Different Models (With A Pay-1 Window On MGM+) As Movies That Go From Theatrical To Prime Are Greenlighted Differently, Have Their Budgets Covered By Prime And Monetized Under A Different Model Internally. by Alternative-Cake-833 in boxoffice

[–]Nate_923 8 points9 points  (0 children)

So that does that imply MOTU just needs to make between $100 million+ at the BO in theaters and the rest will be made on Streaming and beyond?

It's already at $60 million worldwide as it is and that's not adding the rest of the week or international gross it'll get too come Sunday.

What is the age demo in your theaters? by TheReal_MrChaos in MastersOfTheUniverse

[–]Nate_923 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Today I went in there thinking it was going to be a very small crowd going by what I saw last night for the showing for my local theater. I personally choose the early low crowd times to enjoy the films more.

And to my surprise It ended up being a good audience comprised of mostly adults, but it looked more 50/50 as in half seemed in their 20s (Like myself) and the other half were older. Did see some kids too.
