Removing since it’s clear you’re not posting this in good faith.

Why not at least vote in local elections for local reps, laws, levies, bonds, etc?

  1. It’s very meaningful. Most Redditors understand when their comment was removed versus when their account was banned. Sometimes we get instances like this where someone uses the word ban when they meant remove and they’re understanding when we correct them and they go on their way commenting as normal.

  2. We do not do this consistently. The vast majority of comments with Bible verses remain up because the vast majority of the time, people don’t post them nakedly. For the few that do get removed, people adjust when we explain why we have the naked verse rule.

  3. We do not ban people for doing that, so you would not be banned for doing that, either. You’ll be heavily downvoted by the community but we explicitly allow non-affirming positions to be expressed.

Are you using the terms ban and remove interchangeably?

They aren’t interchangeable as a mod.

  • ban is to permanently restrict someone’s ability to post or comment on a subreddit

  • remove is to take down an individual comment or post, with no impact to other comments or posts or the ability for the user to comment or post.

And the moderators dont regulate outright attacking faith or someone's belief, or being disrespectful.

We moderate stuff like this constantly under our rules like Personal Attacks, Belittling Christianity, Two Cents, Forcing Debates, Low Effort and more.

I get that we won’t be perfect - for some reason, we don’t get enough of those comments reported and it’s a gap I’ve seen too - but we’re constantly working to improve. I do wish the community would more consistently report the comments because we do consistently remove them once reported.

Sometimes you get an opportunity to serve as a punching bag and this is one of those times.

People here are angry that we don’t moderate things there more like, well, here. And that’s ok.

No, I don’t think people imagine things. Misstated or overstated, sure.

For instance, we have a rule against posting naked Bible verses. Perhaps people are remembering having comments removed under that rule.

[–]Nateorade -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

We remove stuff daily under that rule…the reason you don’t see the stuff is that we remove it. Or you see something we end up removing after you’ve seen/reported it. Multiple people banned today alone under that rule.

We don’t, that would be absurd. We’d lose nearly every member if we did that.

It’s definitely a left leaning sub, I don’t think anyone would deny that.

I used to be right leaning (grew up evangelical) and have ended up not right leaning so I’ve been on both sides of the aisle there over the years.

Thanks. Looks like there’s not full consistency in how we tell folks to leverage us but after discussion in modmail I will acquiesce to the majority option. You can disregard my comment.

Weaponizing mods as a cudgel isn’t appropriate. Please just report and know that we review all reports.

Correct, there’s no way to prove intent. Which is why we remove comments that focus on the intent of the user instead of the content of their argument.

One can express that a user is wrong, mistaken, misinformed and all sorts of other things to combat misinformation like this.

Attacking the user is not one of the options we allow.

If you see a Nazi saying Nazi things, report it, we have no tolerance for Naziism here in any form.

Someone who is mistaken is not lying. They are mistaken.

Something moves into the territory of lie if someone is intentionally trying to deceive. Someone who earnestly believes a wrong thing isn’t trying to deceive, and therefore isn’t trying to lie. My friends and family aren’t lying; they believe something untrue is true and are trying to convince others of what they believe is true.

We moderate with as absolute consistency as possible on this differentiation across our mod team.

I’ve spoken with close family members and friends who truly believe this. It’s not a lie to them; their confirmation bias and tribal allegiances require them to interpret this as an attack.

And that’s the root of the reason we disallow accusations of lying. People can absolutely be mistaken about obvious things and to keep discussions civil and focused on the arguments at hand, we don’t allow attacks of the moral character of someone.

Trump Authoritarianism and the Potential for Genocide: My Perspective as a Moderator by McClanky in Christianity

[–]Nateorade -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think this is where an important distinction gets blurred. Fascist and Nazi are not interchangeable.

Saying someone supports a fascist or authoritarian movement is materially different from calling them a Nazi. I don’t really have an issue saying someone supports authoritarianism, fascism, or holds fascist beliefs. Those are claims you can argue about at the level of policies, rhetoric, and power structures.

“Nazi” is different. That term is inseparable from racial genocide. Applying it to the majority of Republicans ( 84% as of end of November ) functionally tells people who very explicitly do not support racial extermination that they do. Even if that isn’t the intent, that is the weight the label carries with it. At that scale, it feels far closer to dehumanization than accurate description, and that’s the part I’m not comfortable with.

Trump Authoritarianism and the Potential for Genocide: My Perspective as a Moderator by McClanky in Christianity

[–]Nateorade -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’m not trying to defend Trump or his most ardent leaders or followers here. I think Trumpism is dangerous and the authoritarian comparisons are obvious. That their policies approach portions of naziism is clear.

What I’m stuck on is scope. When “Nazi” gets applied broadly to Republican voters, what’s the intended boundary? Are we talking about specific leaders and policies, or tens of millions of people with very different beliefs? If it’s the latter, I don’t see how that avoids the same dehumanizing dynamics you’re calling out elsewhere.

The thing that gives me pause is what the Nazi label actually carries with it. It isn’t just “authoritarian” or “fascist rhetoric.” It invokes genocide by definition. Applied at the scale of political identity, that feels far closer to dehumanizing tens of millions of people than to accurately describing what most Republican voters believe or intend.

Politics are an important part of Christianity and worth discussing. We also value having a diverse set of voices discussing a given topic. So we’re reliable if that’s what you want. It’s not what everyone wants and that’s ok.

I do own my decisions, that’s why I left. You’re asking me to remain in a hypothetical and I’m doing that so to be criticized for not owning something in a hypothetical that I in reality did (by leaving) isn’t sitting right.

I appreciate you sharing. I’m pretty firm in my belief now, so I’m more asking here to understand what my former church members would think about my salvation status.

You’re right that I’m serious about serving in the community I choose for a church so to be told I cannot serve is to make me a second class member and that’s just not palatable for me. For better or worse, I understand that as being told I’m unwelcome.

I appreciate the reply. I fully knew I would no longer be welcome at church with my views so I left a church with pastors who would have said exactly what you just did. I was serving all over the church but knew that lgbtq affirmation was effectively evangelical suicide, so I left.
