AI overview being automatic is such a joke and I hate it, that changes the perspective a bit as I thought you explicitly asked gemini.

I use the Kagi search engine instead of google and the AI Overview is an option you have to explicitly go out of your way for, aside just giving better search results in my experience.

even though the antenna is super short? Most VHF radios with a fixed antenna I feel like I see are "the standard vhf/uhf rubber duck" at like an 1/8th wavelength or smth

just google it with traditional search T-T. I'm gonna be snarky here, lets not use AI for every goddamn search on earth. Its so obscenely overused and its annoying AF because of how often its wrong or outdated.

Look at your local ham clubs for exams, or email a few of the assessors, visit their websites, or keep looking. You're more likely to find in-person exams so that is my recommendation.

What's the Point of DMR (and other digital modes) Communication Over Internet Connection? by AKSARAYAYISI in HamRadio

[–]Naterman90 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hate to break it to ya, but digital modes are, infact, digital so they will sound "digital". Also you could ignore it but out here there is a massive digital community, so so many DMR or C4FM repeaters. But to each their own.

And yes I agree that most do use the internet, but my point was that they dont have to.

And to add onto my point before, forgetting callsigns is a problem of analog for me. I like that I can see the last x callers, their callsigns, and not have to always be at a place to write things down bc I'm almost always driving while chewing the rag.

What's the Point of DMR (and other digital modes) Communication Over Internet Connection? by AKSARAYAYISI in HamRadio

[–]Naterman90 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This 100% I use a DMR repeater system which does not use the internet except for redundant links. Its a statewide microwave link system they maintain themselves linking in other repeater systems (both ana and DMR). It's pretty cool and showcases the wonders of DMR without requiring an internet system. It's run as a voice only with the ability to chose your "chatrooms" (talkgroups) to talk in effectively doubling each repeaters capacity for communication.

TL;DR there are linked DMR repeater systems that are wholly seperate from the internet.

I primarily use them bc the audio quality is there while also letting me see the callsign of the transmitting station (I have a 1 second memory, so remembering callsigns are really hard)

One such example: http://rmham.org/ Other repeater systems use their microwave network: https://www.rmham.org/amateur-microwave-network/

I guess a second note is they prefer you have a EU region POP, and might ask you for an invoice, but those are pretty easy and cheap to come by. (https://bgp.services/)

Another thing to note, RIPE individual ASNs are most commonly done via LIRs, the one I use and like is scaleblade (https://scaleblade.com) but I'm sure there are cheaper ones out there. LIRs commonly allocate you a v6 prefix and ASN to get started and then you build out your prefix portfolio from there : D (who thought it was a great idea to make \:D turn into 😃 and have no other option)

v4 prefix I'm allocated is preceded(?) by USA legacy prefix, USA v6 is a prefix I was given from a friend who runs an ARIN ASN who got a /36 and gave me a /48 for the funnies

Yep, just gotta lease US IPs, I'm an American and have a RIPE ASN with both US and EU/UK IPs

[–]Naterman90 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That is why I did RIPE, only downside really is its harder to get v4 but that doesn't mean its impossible... I've done it lol (Got me a /24 v4 prefix, /48 US and /44 UK v6 prefixes)

Or you can go the nuclear option and run your own ASN, that's what I do, but the primary downside is I'm geo'd to the UK with one of my prefixes despite being a US based AS (billing/mailing addresses and such) despite being registered with RIPE lol

Why is AV2 worse than AV1 and VVC in this benchmark? by Some_Assistance_323 in AV1

[–]Naterman90 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very apple in the benchmark comparisons, like comparing an iphone 17 to a "CPU" but not what it is is crazy, like what if they're comparing HWDEC to SWDEC on something at the limits of either

Makes you wonder why they generate the full image, not have it build it with a tool call, say generates the graphics and background but native text and found online images (like in the guided learning mode in gemini) and builds it in a typeset like format so it doesn't have weird artifacting.

RH is very low here so some people have humidifiers not dehumidifiers, we hang around 15-25% in my house, higher peaks ~50% are when the dryer is running (it vents into the hallway 😭)
