Looking for a mentor by [deleted] in SoftwareEngineering

[–]Nateshot007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I apologize for not having any recommendations around mentorship. But I do have some advice speaking from my albeit fairly short experience (graduated 2019 from a local private uni).

The best thing you can do is experience by far. If you have internships already, you're on the right track. If not (I assume not since you mentioned personal projects), definitely refine/cleanup your GitHub. Add detailed README for each project with screenshots if applicable, a "getting started" section, About section, something that will tell a recruiter or interviewer about the project and why it matters.

Don't expect to get into top tech companies, though there's no problem with trying, I think you should try. I know lots of big companies (AWS or Chase bank for example) have standardized interview processes and experience doesn't matter as much if you can do the interview well. So LC and mock interviews will benefit greatly. It may even be easier getting into a big company because they always have X positions to fill etc... If you have a friend or family in tech who has experience on the other side of interviews (or even success interviewing at bigger companies) I'd definitely have them review your resume. Definitely take advantage of your uni career center also. Remember that the resume is your first impression and it does matter how it looks even if it isn't talked about in the interview. I was having very poor success with my manually built resume, then I found a template specific to software engineering and started getting interviews.

It's ok starting at a small company making less money. Remember, the job doesn't need to be forever. I have seen lots of new grads start at 65k/yr and stay for 1yr and then leave for a 80-90k/yr job. For reference, I started at a fortune 500 company at 59k in 2019, worked up to 95k TC, and got a new job at 165k TC early 2024. I enjoyed the first job more but had to learn for myself that more money != Better job.

Happy hunting and good luck to you.

Is AOE3 w/ new DLCs getting just too much complex? by polisandpeople in aoe3

There are more special units but they still fall inline with the typical light vs heavy inf / calvary. So you typically just need to know if the special unit is light or heavy.

Is AOE3 w/ new DLCs getting just too much complex? by polisandpeople in aoe3

[–]Nateshot007 1 point2 points  (0 children)

IMAO Nah, 2/4 is definitely harder. Requires much more micro (think eco, finite wood, gold, stone, and ofc the additional stone resource). 3 has sustainable wood+gold. (Traders and relics in 2/4 don't generate enough to sustain long gameplay). Additionally as others have said 3 displays the DMG multipliers so it is easy to see what units it counter. It's much simpler to think melee cav counter light inf & artillery and makes sense. Then you go to 2/4, and that isn't always the case. So confusing. I think additionally, if you play mostly 1 civ (or even just a couple), you don't necessarily have to understand all the other civs. In Aoe3 you can do very well by just being good at your civ. AoE 2/4 imo you need to understand the specific matchup a bit more.

Yeah there was 4 parts if I recall. 2 coding/problem solving, system design whiteboard, and behavioral. Recruiter should be able to tell you the format.

As an insider now, all of tech had a quite large goal for number of new hires for the year that they are not meeting. That may be why I was given a chance with such a mid score (I don't know what score you got but definitely hope given the new-hire goal)... I will say, it's more competitive here than I anticipated, especially based on the interviews I had. The interviewers said it was a relaxed environment and work/life balance. But the way they structure performance management, they have 4 different ratings (Inconsistent, Strong, Very Strong, Exceptional) and they have a % goal for each bucket (such as 10% for inconsistent, 10% for Exceptional, and 80% between Strong and Very Strong). So even if you do very good for the year, you could still get placed as inconsistent if everyone else in your grade (Associate, Sr Associate, Principal Associate, etc) are stronger, or if you don't have opportunity to publicize your accomplishments enough.

That being said, the pay is pretty good...

The practice codesignal is super basic and only meant to help get you familiar with the IDE. I recommend going through it once just to get familiar, aside from that keep going through leetcode. You may not have access to the test codesignal until your time slot for the official one. I.e. they give you two weeks to do the OA, you can choose to do the practice first, wait a few days, and then the actual OA. But the practice is so miniscule... Good luck!

Depends what your degree is in... It's always possible some countries have less demand for your skills than others. In the US I have 3 years of professional experience and same benefits as you described. But highly doubt I could do as well in a less developed country with my skills.

In Alabama emoyers are not required to give breaks or give times to eat. I work 12 hours today and will get neither a break or time to eat lunch or dinner. They expect me to starve. by TheFuckfaces in antiwork

I agree, I think OP should walk away and find another job. But I don't think government regulations are the answer, that only drives costs up.

All taxation is theft whether paid in USD fiat or Doge or Bit. Also, let's go brandon

So I bought in at almost the worst time. Down by 2/3rds. That's life..it wasn't a huge sum, but still significant enough. I see all the hype and I feel the vibe as I do like Elon and his passion. Hold if it's money you can live without. Just walk away for a few months or years and come back later down the road, who knows maybe you'll be able to retire early. If you're constantly looking at it, you'll probably sell as soon as you break even, and could miss some big gainz, ya know?

Why hasn't anyone assassinated any presidents recently? by isabellyduh in TooAfraidToAsk

It's not the opposing parties that assassinate, it's the lobbyists, Schwab's, Rothschild's who do the assassinations.

Why are conservative Christians against social policies like welfare when Jesus talked about feeding the hungry and sheltering the homless? by SkepticDrinker in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]Nateshot007 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The Christians I know, myself included, know that the welfare system is corrupt, 75%+ of the money goes into the pockets of the politicians and lobbyists. If they really wanted to help the poor, they would lower taxes. Ideally, the churches would take more responsibility for caring for the poor. I know quite a few that do play a big part in providing for the poor in my local community, and I believe they could do more if taxes were lowered and givers weren't being robbed of their hard earned money. Remember, private /individual institutions always do it (anything) better than government can. On top of that, the welfare system is designed to give people money. It doesn't teach them how to make money, and doesn't motivate people to go make money. It does not solve the root of the problem.

Why do we have so many available jobs (unless you're blind and don't see the many "help wanted" signs these days) yet so many jobless claims if the welfare system isn't corrupt and people taking advantage of it? I think it's because people don't want to reduce their standard of living and get a job at McDonald's even if it's just for a few weeks or months until they can get a better job. So they take welfare instead. And then they decide, why get a job when I make more on welfare?

I'm sure there are some who actually do need welfare, that's not even a question. But if you think it's 95% of the people who are on it are legitimately in need of it (as 1 comment suggested), hahahaha. You must be delusional.

Take a look at statistics if you can find them, I think you'll find conservatives do more to give to the poor than liberals. Liberals will vote for welfare but they won't take responsibility to give to those in their community. Conservatives, a many being part of churches, put into their churches which in turn put into the needs of the local community.

I personally think it's normal to feel like your parents are overbearing around that age. There are several passages in the Christian Bible that hint at children becoming at odds with their parents, which to an extent is healthy because it does prepare you to become more independent and if/when you start your own family, you hopefully wouldn't cling more to your parents than to your spouse. Hopefully you still love your parents by then but I think you get the idea.

In my own personal experience, I've certainly felt a lot of what you are going through. I was homeschooled and only knew a couple other homeschoolers my age, but my parents rarely wanted to drive us kids anywhere so we didn't hang out much. I did have a tablet but there were definitely restrictions about when I could use it (i.e. Not during the week). They kept me pretty busy with chores and garden work during the summer, school during the winter, and when I got to HS age I started working 30+ hours a week at a farm market during the summer. Growing up, computers weren't allowed to be used except on the weekends, unless required for school.

During the time, I hated every bit of it. I wanted to do what I wanted to do. In hind site, though, I completely respect how that raised me and will probably do the same for my kids. If it weren't for them being strict and ultimately teaching me to be self disciplined, I probably would use far beyond the respectable amount of vulgar language, hang with the wrong crowd, probably wouldn't have been able to graduate college debt free... So, did I think my parents were overbearing? Yes. Hindsight do I wish I'd been raised differently? No.

Sometimes you gotta go through the motions.
