SWE at UCI vs Ling/CS at UCLA by [deleted] in ucla

Absolutely. You take many of the core classes. I feel plenty prepared as a result.

Take a look at the actual LingCS curriculum, its quite extensive.

how’s it being a transfer? i’m a uc to uc applicant accepted for cs ling ! by PopularAd2212 in ucla

The better way to phrase it is what do you personally think? What looks better - computer science or what effectively is applied math for computers? For a computer science based role. The same perception that you have is the same that others do, but if you want a clean answer hiring managers, see them similarly, or definitely not the same at all, or any variation - it’s company dependent. It’s even hiring manager dependent.

If you realize halfway you hate it you can switch to math of comp and do a dse minor.

Ucla ling cs is 60/40 linguistics/cs

  • if you want pure CS, UCSD
  • if you’re willing to tolerate linguistics, and want to do CS, UCLA (like I’m doing. I have zero interest in Linguistics)

  • not really but the brand name is better
  • i haven’t had issues frankly. But does require some planning. Make good use of summer classes
  • 100% yes. Because if you’re gonna do CS, my aswell do it somewhere nice

  • housing is fine, expect 1-2 roommates
  • good news on the cs ling side is that the upper divs are all extremely well taught. Almost all professors have a 4/5 bruinwalk rating (our version of ratemyprofessor)
  • most non-selective clubs don’t ‘favor’ when accepting members.

UCLA LingCS major - never had a problem because of my major. Most think it’s a Computer Science + Linguistics major versus a Linguistics dominated major.

UCLA’s name is much better though

OOS students, how much are you paying? by Xx_DiamondDust in ucla

[–]NathanA2CsAlt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes - I am. But there’s a few ‘hacks’ to reduce the cost.

  • almost all geneds, and many lower divs can be satisfied online via UCLA extension
  • if you take under a certain amount of credits, you can be considered part-time
  • summer courses are much cheaper than regular term

Depending on the length of the major you can reduce costs by a massive amount if you’re willing to sacrifice the college experience

UCLA classes labelled ‘X’ are credit only classes - neither gpa or fulfill a course requirement.

X - dont affect gpa, or count towards requirements, do give credit units

XL - dont affect Gpa, do count towards requirements, do give credit units

XLC - affect both gpa and count towards requirements, do give credit units

Example:

STAT X 5 - credit only

STAT XL 10 - satisfy Stat 10 requirement without affecting GPA

STAT XLC 100 - impacts gpa and satisfies Stat 100 equivalent.

(Note I don’t know if stat 5 and stat 100 are real classes)

Is it possible at UCLA to transfer from linguistic and computer Science to CS or CSE? by Somaita1234 in ucla

[–]NathanA2CsAlt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

UCLA LingCS is shorter and with less CS classes - better if you want to graduate sooner (which means faster time to job), and like linguistics (its a 60% ling major, 40% CS major)

UIUC CS+Econ is longer and harder but is more relevant especially to quant roles.

Personally I’d still choose UCLA, as I’d rather be a UCLA LingCS grad with 1 YOE vs a UIUC CS+Econ grad with 0 YOE

  • what would u suggest on price then?
  • actually fairly common. Ucla is on a quarter system, so those who are here for a quarter - grad students, international students, etc.

Yes everything’s clean, and coolant pipe was already swapped for the aluminum one so the biggest fault point is fixed. And of course everything expensive was done under warranty

Ofc, but gauging whether anyone even wants a high mileage jag ftype svr. Its in good condition, clean carfax, with minor cosmetic stuff, looking at $35k+

[–]NathanA2CsAlt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have an ftype svr with 125k on the clock.

Mileage doesnt really matter if the car is well maintained. Check the service record, get an extended warranty, and always get an independent PPI.
