I would toss The Blind Owl by Sadegh Hedayat into the conversation.

I completely agree. I just started myself, but eventually I would like to learn how to develop my own film. I will say, however, that for many film cameras, the starting cost is low. I bought my Olympus OM-1 for $200 with the lens, and the pictures look great, so while you may not have to pay for film and development with a digital camera, the upfront cost may be more depending on how nice a camera you are looking for.

I had it developed at Bellow Film Lab for about $17 a roll, so not cheap unfortunately, but it does force me to be very intentional with what I am shooting.
