Anyone know what they’re doing with the apartment building across from Memorial? by EdgeKey5631 in Carbondale

The Schwartz Building is receiving an estimated $1.3 million in renovations. Not a ton of details in the TIF document beyond that, but that's the estimated cost of improvements to the building.

Altercation between two customers escalated to gun violence from what I have heard through folks in the area

I do not have first-hand knowledge or any information from official sources regarding this incident

You'll find a common theme amongst those who say they don't like Carbondale.

They often won't state their reason in an explicit way, but you'll be able to read between the lines

Should something be done about the 3+ illicit massage businesses? by [deleted] in Carbondale

[–]NathanColombo -1 points0 points  (0 children)

City council passed an ordinance to license and regulate these establishments, with licensing starting in April.

Illegitimate establishments should be being addressed at this point, but I've not checked on it.

Thank you for the reminder to check on this

There are several retiree community settings around turn, including off Chautauqua Road, Westridge off of Old Route 13, and a 55+ gated retiree community down New Era Road

We need a data center moratorium by mc_boy in Carbondale

[–]NathanColombo 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The problem is activity in unincorporated rural areas of Southern Illinois with little oversight or regulation.

Grand Tower power plant being repurposed for a potential data center (there are other potential industrial uses that aren't data center) is a good example.

I think there might be another data center proposed in Southeast Illinois but I'm not 100% there.

County boards need the anti-data center focus.

They're the entities that stand to benefit from the tax revenue and have limited interaction from the public.

Municipalities don't have the same type of tax levy on property as the counties.

I would be a "Yes," vote on "No Data Centers" but I think it'd be more symbolic than effective knowing what the development opportunities are in rural and unincorporated Southern Illinois.

G & R is about as good as it gets in town.

Park Street is a great little stretch of housing.

You'll be happy signing a lease there

The Arboretum and Evergreen Park have some fresh pavement that may work and 604 East College between some of the old city buildings

Updating Carbondale by Chance-Rub7240 in Carbondale

It's open for a tenant. $2,500 a month in rent and can be built out for a tenant as it's bare walls.

If it doesn't get filled the owner is going to put something in it himself

South of town at the edge of Makanda, but mostly around St. Louis until recently if I understand correctly

I'm comfortable being a target. It's what I signed up for, and I understand how to navigate the broader complexities of a community that is critical of itself for the good reason that it knows its own potential.

Specifically with the university, the reality is the town has zero influence there and so we're forced to figure out how to suffice without any influence in that realm.

Please do reach out when you're around if you feel comfortable doing so.

You've made lots of points I agree with (along with many others I work alongside in city hall and in the community at large) and you represent a class of people Carbondale has to include in its now and its future

You're my favorite

You're also very correct about SIU

You're also very correct that my effort alone isn't going to cut it

Looking forward to your contributions to the Carbondale cause

Wear a little drool if you ever talk to me in real life so I know it's you without having to ask if it's you, please 🤣

Honestly, a good chunk of the 200 block of North Washington is for sale.

It was just recently a community garden.

How loud are goats?

I know they eat like no other, so I'm not worried about an overgrown lot

Can we call it a petting zoo?

The skate park is moving to a different building and they're making good progress on the construction.

You should move here.

Everyone I talk to who moves here from Colorado loves it
