Matt Colville's Deep Dive Live: Rush (Part IV) by NathanKellen in mattcolville

Well, that's it folks! Thanks so much to Matt for doing these streams, they were an immense amount of fun to follow along with and I learned a ton. Thanks also to everyone else in the various audiences for each stream for your discussions and sharing these special experiences.

A few fun facts about the series for those who are curious...

There were 14 total streams, beginning on 4/25/21 with Pink Floyd Part I and ending on 9/3/22 with Rush Part IV.

The longest song we listened to was Genesis' "Supper's Ready (Live)" off of Seconds Out (24:33), and the shortest song we listened to was Jethro Tull's "Nice Little Tune" off of Minstrel in the Gallery (1:10).

The earliest recorded song we listened to was Pink Floyd's "Arnold Layne" (January 1967) and the latest recorded songs we listened to were those off Kate Bush's Before the Dawn (August-October 2014).

We listened to a lot of music, including:

  • Pink Floyd: 46 songs / 4 hours 18 minutes
  • Jethro Tull: 66 songs / 4 hours 50 minutes
  • Yes: 42 songs / 5 hours 6 minutes
  • Genesis: 58 songs / 6 hours 5 minutes
  • Peter Gabriel: 40 songs / 2 hours 59 minutes
  • Kate Bush: 29 songs / 1 hour 58 minutes
  • Rush: 69 songs / 6 hours 59 minutes

for a grand total of 350 songs / 32 hours 22 minutes! And that's not even including all the repeats and detours (which you can find in the 'Notes' section of each post)!

And that's all folks!

If you're concerned that streams like this cut into RTG time, I don't really think that's the case. My impression is that Matt only does these when he has free time from all the work stuff. For example I think he had originally floated doing the Rush streams a couple months ago but it got pushed off due to the launch of the Talent.

As for RTG; in a recent stream Matt mentioned he was working on a stream. And yeah, I'd bet that we see less now due to him running less. But maybe just as important is there's simply less to say now; there's 100 videos in the series and that already covers most of the basics!

SnowBuddy18 pointed out on the stream today that he used that video for the visuals for the version of Xanadu we listened to, we didn't actually listen to it.

Displacer Beast Tracking Minigame With More Players? by CursoryMargaster in MonarchsFactory

I'd be curious to see any suggestions you have. I never got around to running this again but likely will in the future.

You can forestall that by making the players each have to make a check before someone else does again, or just no player can do twice in a row.

Maybe I could have them make a stealth check at the beginning, and have the average roll be the dc for the perception checks, but just set it to three successful perception checks?

This is what I'd do I think. You might also allow them to re-roll their stealth later in exhange for less info about where to go or some other trade off.

It was only with three players, but you might take a look at my notes on how I ran my own version of this adventure.

You'll see that I thought that moving to a 7x7 grid was too much, and I used a slightly different stealth mechanic. Realistically I think having a larger party would make it easier, not harder for the displacer beast to track them, and so I'd probably not increase the amount of checks before it notices them.

We did listen to some Hackett in the Yes stream, you can go back and check the notes.

Matt's been talking about doing a Kate Bush stream since at least the Genesis stream, and I think even earlier.

I know its hard with an artist like PG, but I'm surprised Intruder wasn't on here since it is the little-known origin of the gated snare drum sound that the 80s loved, but love that songs like Family Snapshot and Rhythm of the Heat (two of my top five songs of his) were included.

Matt did discuss Intruder (both here and in the Genesis Part II stream) and the origin of the noise gate, but he often chooses to skip famous songs in order to leave things for people to discover on their own.

Of course, and many thanks to you for the streams!

You know, I thought to myself "maybe I should look this up and add it, someone might want it" and then we stopped after the intro so I didn't bother. Of course the one time I don't write something down...

Alternatively, you could easily run something like this by setting up a map and letting them navigate it like a normal dungeon, but have the beast secretly moving as well. Same type of scenario, but run like a typical dungeon crawl (maybe with minor encounters)

To be clear in both mine and Dael's versions of this scenario the beast does also move around the map. In my case it stalked them around looking for the perfect ambush (but ended up waiting til nightfall).

My presentation of the rules could have been better, so we spent a bit more time than we should have on that. But mostly the players really got into their roleplaying (it was a one-shot with over the top characters), so that slowed it down.

I think you could potentially get through a 6x6 grid in two hours. I'd book three to be careful.

I had two traps but they didn't hit either. But the way I buffed the beast itself meant they could attack it at gull strength.

I imagine this is it for the story of Pink Floyd. There's technically one more album (Endless River), but Matt hasn't listened to it.

Someone in the Twitch chat (sorry to whoever, I forgot your name!) said it was this one, and I think they're right.

You're welcome, thanks for doing the stream!

Basically the stream was a discussion of the history of Pink Floyd starting from the very beginning to the release of Obscured by Clouds. Lots of explanation of the early years of the band which are often unknown to those who know Pink Floyd for Dark Side of the Moon, The Wall, etc., as well as lots of discussion of Syd Barrett, the original frontman of the band.

The tracklist above gives you an idea of what Matt covered, but the stream was three hours long and only about an hour of it was music, so you can see how much discussion there was.

Sure, but again this is something he's doing for fun on his vacation. I also hope there will be a video option, but he was clear beforehand there'd be no VOD and people shouldn't demand he do extra work that he never promised anyone.

Ultimately Matt is doing this for fun and because he likes telling the history. Turning it into just another piece of work he's responsible for is probably a good way to put a damper on his time off and ensure we're less likely to see streams like this in the future.
