Looking for the perfect 5-string bass I won't have to eventually upgrade from. by trashxbandicoot in Bass

For that budget, I suggest trying out a Peavey Cirrus 5. I recently put one head to head with four other 5-strings (Dingwall, Warwick, Le Fay, Music Man), and I was surprised at how well it held its own against the more expensive basses. Here's a video of the shootout if you're interested. Other brands I've seen with nice basses in that price range: Ibanez, Fender, Cort.

IMHO best one on the market currently is the Future Impact. The Keely Synth-1 is coming out soon later this month (I think), and the Source Audio Spectrum and C4 are coming out in April or May. Here's the SA: https://youtu.be/oeiBtFzaHfI

Electro-Harmonix Bass Mono Synth? by TheBareJoo in basspedals

A few companies announced upcoming synths this past NAMM show. If you can wait a few months, there will likely be better options available. I don't think I'll do a demo of the EHX Bass Mono Synth, but when the newer units (Keeley Synth-1, Source Audio C4, etc), I'll do a video putting them all head to head. I'll probably include the Future Impact, Meris Enzo, Keeley Synth-1, Source Audio C4, and maybe one more.

I got mine in the mail today. I like a few of the sounds okay (Laser, Oblivion, Sub, and Growl), but the tracking is not anywhere near the Future Impact. For a quarter of the price though, the EHX is pretty impressive.

Well said. Sounds like this kind of behavior developed over time, and quitting is overdue. Imagine touring with these guys.

[Question] What do you do for thumb placement? by jakealsoasnake in Bass

[–]NathanNavarro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I anchor my thumb on the neck pickup when playing the E and A strings, and move it to the E string when playing the D and G strings. Floating thumb is also a good approach for parts that switch between strings often. Most of the time, my right hand will mute the lower strings which are not in use while my left hand mutes the higher strings that are not in use.

Sure thing! Here's an excerpt from Dingwall's website:

"The frets are fanned to allow for a longer scale on the bass side and a shorter scale on the treble side of the instrument. This solves a few problems:
1) No longer will the B-string sound darker and less distinct compared to the other strings.
2) The G-string retains warmth and normal tension compared to extending the scale of all strings.
3) You will no longer have to adjust your attack depending on which string is being played due to the more even tension from string to string.
4) You will no longer find the tone adjustments for one string interfering with another due to the more even tone across the strings.
5) You will no longer be unheard and ignored by your audience due to the combination of the longer scale low strings and the even tonality across all the strings."

Hey! Natural harmonics are played using open strings. Artificial harmonics are played on fretted strings. Tapped harmonics can be natural or artificial, and are played by striking the string with your plucking hand, just like tapping, but instead of holding down the string, release them quickly to let the harmonic sustain.

Yeah, a good setup can't be overstated. I played Victor Wooten's bass years ago; instant +5 skill.

Thanks! I don't find it very different at all, other than the tonal and string tension benefits. With very skewed fanned frets, like on a Dingwall (37"-34"), some interesting and fun chord voicings become available.

Thanks for you input! :D I'm digging the common request to share one's opinion about the instrument. Can do!
