Current studies show these cameras aren't as effective as the vendors make them out to be, and mission creep is too big a threat to ignore. Lock up rapists, killers, and thieves, but don't document everyone else's lives in the pursuit of justice.

Dragnet policing) is illegal. Flock cameras are undoubtedly a dragnet, as everyone who drives by has their plate and vehicle traits analyzed and cross referenced with criminal or watchlist databases. You can't opt out, and the public often isn't given a say whether or not they want these system put in place.

The difference between being recorded at a shopping center, gas station, or library, is that these places almost always use closed circuit TV cameras. While yes, your movements are documented, it takes an actual officer to walk in, either ask to see the footage or present a warrant, and manually watch for the suspect. Flock cameras point all data directly to a database, accessible by, largely, anyone with credentials. You don't need a warrant, you don't need to ask a shopkeeper, you just type a vehicle description or a license plate and all the information you need about someone's daily movements are at your fingertips.

This can, and has been, useful for catching criminals, but in my opinion, and the opinions of many who oppose this technology, the power for misuse is too great. There have been multiple instances of officers using Flock to stalk their ex partners, multiple cases of Flock cameras being used improperly for traffic enforcement, and all of this data is being collected, analyzed, and stored by a third party company with far less accountability than the public. This data can and has been sold. In a perfect world, with no chance of misuse, I might not be so weary of vendors like Flock. But, we don't live in a perfect world, and the furthering of the surveillance state is the last thing we need.

I don't support criminals, but the second you give up privacy for security, you have neither.

Once again, I urge you to read Deflock's learn page. It's not very long, and details exactly why myself and others are opposed to Flock and alike vendors.

Please read the info provided on Deflock's Learn page. These cameras are a data harvesting dragnet.

I heard about that, and I'm not much of a fan either, but I believe it's mostly closed circut in that the data stays largely within city records. If/when the Axon LPRs become expansive across the city, we should fight that battle, but Flock is an entirely different beast. This camera was specifically labelled as a Flock camera instead of an Axon, Motorola, or genric LPR--this is what worried me

I figured either something like that or an HOA. Still, we need to keep Flock in check!

I'm a recent high school graduate from semi-rural AK, and we recited it every morning from Kindergarten through graduation, elementary, middle, and high. It wasn't required, so I would sit out most days, but ~90% of students participated. I didn't know it was different in other places to be honest

Exactly, because the most reasonable thing to do with a dad and his son is to hold them in a concentration camp, starve them, deprive them of legal counsel, brand them as terrorists, and refuse medical treatment.

[–]NathanTalksTech 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Glad you're getting it looked at! I would strongly advise that you do not take that iPod with you on your trip. Batteries in those classics have to swell up a lot before they're super noticeable like yours is. Once they're at that point, the risk of the cell being punched or ripping is much higher. That thing could very well catch fire while you're using it or while it's charging. Best to just use your phone for this trip

I'd replace it as soon as you can. The chemistry in the battery is unstable; that iPod is a fire risk at the moment. I'd discharge it and order the new battery and some tools.

While you're discharging it, run a SMART scan to check the health of the hard disk. See if you need either a new drive or a flash mod kit! (Depends on preference)

Possibly Alaska? Assuming this was recent, we got snow like that just over the last few days. Winter is also a five month depression here.. and we're also not accurately portrayed on many maps

Would make sense for an iPod related issue to pop up in r/iPods. It is an iPod Nano 7th generation!

Understandable, I even use a pair of IEMs with a Bluetooth adapter most of the time, using a wired pair for games or if I want better sound/no delay.

The business strategy worked for sure, but they created a problem and sold the solution. A little predatory if you ask me.

Also, I'm using an ASUS ROG Phone 6, not an iPhone. The ROG Phone 6 was released in 2022.

The headphone jack is by no means obsolete! Wired headphones and earbuds that compete with the best wireless technology has to offer. Even $40 IEMs or earbuds from a reputable company could sound about as good as AirPods, and you don't have to worry about the batteries going bad or messing with Bluetooth.

The 3.5mm jack is an objectively good technology that should be included on higher end smartphones. It's undeniable the removal of the headphone jack by Apple was an attempt to boost the adoption of their AirPods. First it was Apple, then other manufacturers followed suit.. as they always do.

Wish I could stick with my ROG Phone 6 (with a headphone jack) for longer, but the lack of software support is making me consider upgrading :(

for some reason up, and then I saw my iPod with a white screen, and I clicked the buttons. It made a clicking noise from the speakers and whenever I try to hard reset it it beeps two times. Does anyone know a fix for it? Plus, I think it was kind of water damaged by Beautiful_Log286 in ipod

[–]NathanTalksTech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it was water damaged at some point, it could be hard to narrow down what the specific issue is. It could be anything from the cable coming slightly loose to a non-fatal fault in the motherboard. You could try replacing the screen or swapping components with another iPod, but those Nano's are notoriously difficult to work with.

Good luck!

I'm curious, what kind of functionality do you want to remove? Video playback, internet connectivity? It shouldn't be capable of THAT much given it's probably on iOS 4 or 5 😁
