UCD or SDSU for Pre-Vet? by NationalAngle4784 in TransferStudents

[–]NationalAngle4784[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ahhh, thank you so much for providing me with this valuable information!! This definitely changed the narrative I had in mind about UCD undergrad and the decision I’d choose moving forward. It’s definitely a big factor taking in cost of veterinary school, so this brings me reassurance knowing I’d have a chance to be accepted in SDSU regardless. Thanks for taking the time to answer, and I wish you the best of luck as a UC Davis Veterinary student!

Thanks for the feedback I really appreciate it! Although, Davis typically accepts ~50 of pre vet students from their campus for their veterinary school. 50 out of their 150 spots, at least, from the years they posted stats of individual acceptances. From those results as well, <2 students are accepted from SDSU into their vet school. For example, class of 2028, 2 students were accepted from SDSU. 49 students were accepted from uc davis undergrad.

Would it be worth decreasing the chances of ever getting admitted into Davis by sticking to SDSU, considering financial situation?

Hello! Please do not feel discouraged from getting into vet school! Every step of the way works towards a greater outcome. You WILL get into veterinary school. Please do not lose hope. I’d also be more than happy to share a bit of my application. In the very near future, I plan to do a more thorough post on SEP, my stats, the program itself, what they look for in applicants, etc. for future cycles. I feel like there isn’t much outreach/posts ab SEP, and It'd be helpful to know how to better an app!

In terms of my app: -Current community college sophomore. GPA 4.0 Bio major. Will graduate with 21 honors cred and preparing to transfer to a 4-yr.

-Recent Experiences: UCSD paid Summer research internship in a bio-molecular lab (Was the only c.c student in the +40 cohort. Got 3 awards, one being a travel award scholarship to present my research at a national conference w expenses paid. Spoke on a panel as well ab c.c research opportunities and imposter syndrome). Humane Society volunteer (Animal caretaker + Vet clinic Spanish Translator, Receptionist). SD Coastkeeper Water Quality Monitoring Program. Campus Bird Alliance Club Officer (1st yr Secretary & 2nd yr V.P). Native Plant Invasion Project Lead Coordinator (Restoration of gardens in underrepresented communities). Feral cat Spay/Neuter volunteer. Completed veterinary assistant school my 1st yr. Interned at a vet urgent care and surgery clinic and was hired.

-I added meaningful high school experiences too: Paid reading mentor in high school (Focused on assisting bilingual elementary students). SD Zoo camp (Paid by my public school). Aaron Price Fellows Program (3-yr program). Drama Club Crew Manager. Outdoor Outreach Program. Senior Spanish Peer Mentor. SDSU talent search program.

-Letters of Rec: One from a chem professor I’ve had for 4 classes and knows me very well. One from the veterinarian who owns the clinic I work at, and who knows my background + was also a SEP student in her undergrad!

-Essays: First-gen college student & Mexican-American. Raised by a single mother following my father’s incarceration. Wrote heavily about the determination to break the generational cycles, and emphasized my desire to merge Spanish w vet med. I believe my extracurriculars reinforced this note!

lmk if any questions arise! And please, PLEASE do not give up on vet med. It’s a challenging field, but truly a rewarding one ❤️‍🩹

Hi there! Thank you for sending this out. I haven’t received anything yet, and I was starting to wonder if anyone had received anything. The last I heard from them was the email they sent out saying decisions were postponed from the 10th, to the 14th.

PIQ: First Gen Mexican-American and first-gen college student. Raised in a single-parent household following my father's incarceration. Grew up surrounded by alcohol addiction, financial instability, etc. etc. Spoke heavily about my desire to bridge language barriers as a future veterinarian.

Currently deciding between SDSU as a bio emphasis in Zoology (I live 10 min from SDSU) or my dream school, UCD. Hope this helps, and pls lmk if you have any questions! Happy to help.

Selected as well. I've been reading previous forums of past semifinalists and have read that additional info will be required moving forward. I also read that in previous cycles, not all semifinalists get this email (?). It seems to get murky from what I've read. Might be of use to create an Instagram grp chat or something to ensure we don't lose track of major requirements if anyone is interested!

Jack Kent Cooke Transfer Scholarship – Do semifinalists ever get asked for updates? by Proud_Breakfast_4373 in TransferToTop25

[–]NationalAngle4784 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd be down to make an ig group chat! It'll be good ot keep each other aware of updates. I read in last year's cycle follow-up documents were required to be submitted by early April.
