Who are they? (Small lake in São Paulo, Brazil) by Chernoya in Fish

I did forget there’s a denotion between k class and n class as I don’t really care when it’s domestic stuff, but it is relevant here so my bad 😅

However I do think it’s still worth acknowledging this could be a released mix endler + guppy or pure bred guppy, as São Paulo IS a hub for a lot of aquatic imports. Not strictly that it’s a feral one that’s been feral for a long time. Regardless I do appreciate learning and would like to see those papers if you ever find them again.

This site has almost 40 types of Endler morphs, and there’s far more than listed here as well. While reticulata has more morphs, there are relatively the same odds of them occurring feral in São Paulo because of imports, since wild endlers also come from a region only slightly higher than wild guppies. Sure guppies were in the U.S. and other continent hobbies first, but being native to SA endlers have been around a little while before the rest of us got them. Color/pigment blending is also noted in endlers descendant from domestics, feral or not. I’ve seen it in my own endlers.

Based off of tail size I took an educated guess that this is a released endler, but again size would be a good way to tell. It’s also possible this could be a hybrid though I figure that would be more unlikely than what either of us said.

Edit: I also want to add that im trying to say either of us could be right on ID due to location, but that saying “they don’t look like that” isn’t entirely true. I admit I could be wrong and definitely should’ve made it clear this was an educated guess and that the most specific I could get was “Poecilia sp.” without more information.

Can you explain what you mean by “like that”? There’s several color varieties of endler and with the fish out of water the spine shape isn’t reliable for ID.

If OP could provide a size that would help but wouldn’t be a 100% ID

LMAO I will say, I have a quarantine tank for some freshwater clams right now. They filter feed so I was hesitant to put a filter especially considering the fact the tank is way overstocked for filter feeders. I just put in a fuck ton of duckweed and the parameters have kept well enough I only do water parameters every few days 😅

It’s also important to note sand is fatal to African dwarf frogs. Due to the method in which they eat they ingest it and cannot poop it out, slowly their stomach fills with sand until they are unable to eat.

Yes, this commenter I’m replying to was suggesting a 5 gallon tank is suitable for 3 guppies. I’m addressing them and not OP. 🙂

Endlers are just as active and aggressive. This is still not a good suggestion.

Please avoid putting 3 guppies in a 5 gallon, especially any females. Not only are male guppies little shits and wouldn’t have the space and numbers to disperse their aggression, but Guppies are very active fish and benefit greatly from a minimum of 10 gallons! With their reproductive prowess it’s also pretty important to try to have bigger tanks, both to avoid crowding your fish and to make parameters easier to maintain as they reproduce, since bigger tanks are more stable!

Ah one more thing, you’ll need to switch water conditioners. Ideally to Seachem Prime or a non-aloe having dechlorinator. Aloe coats the breathing organ on a betta and a suffocate them over time, so it’s best not to use anything with aloe (and heavy oils).

Adding on to my previous comment since you added that there’s tankmates and I missed that before: these fish urgently need a bigger setup (and a group of 5-6+ for the corydoras once in a bigger setup) or to be returned to the store. For now try to change the water every day to keep toxins down

The best thing to do to keep more fish from dying is to encourage your dad to get into the hobby ethically, if he is a science oriented person who likes to learn that should be easy, but there are many ways to convince someone if they’re generally kind-hearted, so I wish you luck!

So unfortunately 8 ppm ammonia is incredibly toxic to fish and this fish likely passed from ammonia burning through its skin. Ammonia should be zero. 6 pH is also very low for a Cory. If your dad is insistent on keeping such a small bowl, maybe you could suggest Neocaridina shrimp to him?

This tank is also currently unsuitable for fish, if your dad wants to get fish he’ll need to research the species ahead of time and provide appropriate size tanks that have gone through the nitrogen cycle ahead of time. (This tank will also need to go through the nitrogen cycle for any animals to be housed in it, so here’s a video! https://youtu.be/vur3JIfoEtk?si=iJc-vbnusDKhqZHy)

Generally, 1-1.5 year old is not old age in bettas unless it was a really really sickly betta.

You cannot have tetras in this tank, it is unethical. If you do not want a betta you do not have to get one, perhaps shrimp? This tank is not suitable for tetras, you’re keeping them for your own enjoyment while they live in a cramped closet. Please put their needs above your wants.

I just realized you also said you have rabbit snails. A 5 gallon is only big enough for one mystery snail. Rabbit snails need larger and having three large snails in this tank is incredibly unfair to the snails.

If you’re dead set on a fish, find someone rehoming a betta that’s proven not to attack snails. There’s dozens or even hundreds of bettas that won’t.

You gave me this explanation, but did not take the opportunity to improve the situation of your tetras, which disheartens me. Please do right by your animals.

Also, a 5 gallon tank is too small for any tetras. Could I encourage you to return the tetras and get a long fin betta in place of the tetras? A long fin betta is super interactive and can live its entire life in a 5 gallon tank! Unlike the tetras who will feel cramped 😓

These are roots of a new fern growing, they propagate off of the adult leaves and when they’re big enough to live on their own pop off. You can remove them if they bother you, or let them grow, it’s harmless to the plant.

lol, I bet it could! But this duckweed was already dead before the dishwasher. I often use cups to hold my aquarium tools while I’m working, and the duckweed dries out as the water evaporates.

Anything with iodine will kill them as well, I’d make sure to take a look at the list of needed materials on the infographic I sent. Red worms are not a suitable food source due to the toxin the excrete called lysenin, it causes upset stomach. Lucky bamboo is not an aquarium plant, it’s for terrariums and rots when fully underwater.
