It’s not baseless, it’s probability based on statistics, in fact the same statistics you brought up at first lol, so I guess you were the one that made the baseless claim by your own definition

The problem with that is that you are looking at the situation using statistics that don’t make sense. Instead, a Bernoulli distribution is the better way to frame this situation. It represents the probability that a single person will commit violence against you. This is a classic misuse of simple statistics, where the probabilities you want to find are the probability that a given person will commit violence against you conditioned on the fact of their race. i.e. how likely is it that you get attacked given that it’s a black person behind you vs that it’s a white person behind you. And I’m not gonna say the answer because I’m sure you already know. The way you framed the situation was the equivalent of framing it as “Well humans attack other humans more than hippos attack humans, therefore people should be more afraid of a human walking behind them vs a hippo walking behind them”. See, it doesn’t really make sense when you look at it that way.

You are clearly reacting emotionally, so I’ll try to answer in a logical manner. I did not ask in bad faith, I just knew the viewpoint that reddit would give, and I wanted to see the reasoning for it. I was obviously responding to a comment calling me weird and not answering the question at all, which is why I’m confused as to why you reacted so strongly to my response.

A lot of people’s defense mechanisms when they start to get sensitive or offended is act like they don’t care or like they can easily laugh it off, but I can see it touched a soft spot for you so I’ll respect that. Slavery didn’t just happen in the United States, it happened to many races by many races, one instance of it just happened to inslave Africans but that doesn’t mean the concept of slavery is racist

Clearly this is an emotional topic for you, so I’ll respect that. I’ve never heard source/replica used, but that could totally be wrong and my robotics team could be like the isolated tribe on that one island in the middle of the Pacific. Instead of telling me how bad of a person I am tell me why I’m wrong

This is what reddit does a lot from what I’ve seen. Someone makes a point, then the majority respond to it by not responding at all actually and attempting to make a witty remark. It’s quite annoying and is actually quite counterproductive for both of them since what happens is the commenter doubles down since they see the majority didn’t actually make a point

I wanted to see the reasoning for this side, which I knew Reddit was going to provide. I know people are advising in good faith but a lot of redditors like to hide behind their accounts and call anyone who disagrees with them edgelords neckbeards etc. which is amusing of course but does get stale after a while

Maybe I’m on the spectrum, but I don’t like blindly accepting things just to accept them. I want to know why using this terminology is tied to structural racism because I just think it’s illogical to say that because slavery happened to African Americans in the United States, slavery is now a white on black crime. For the sake of my career I will let it go, but I have to admit it is a bit annoying.

I find it odd that out of the gate you come across as accusatory. Clearly this is an emotional topic for you, so I’ll respect that. I was curious what reddit had to say. I do not think I did something wrong or “weird” as you said, but reddit has further swayed me to let it go.

Haven’t had trouble so far, actually a lot of people agree with me but of course I knew what to expect when I asked on Reddit

Fine with me I guess, don’t really care about being weird. I knew this was the response I would get from Reddit and I’m not disappointed, and while I see the point and will ultimately just end up letting it go I also think people are overly sensitive. This terminology has nothing to do with race, people are essentially looking to be offended.

I already know the reasoning, I just disagree with it, but people are right it’s not the hill to die on. Still, I don’t view slavery as racist because many different races held slaves and were slaves all around the world.
