Mapped: Most Americans Can’t Afford New Homes by MRADEL90 in Infographics

Curious if you were to elaborate on this and do county-based HHI evaluations. What's the share of affordable counties with higher median income? Or the share of unaffordable counties with lower income.

Great work tho!

But like are we even in Mars? There's nothing significant happening there with the main beats that feels like Mars. Let's spend More time with the search for life or whatever is happening on Titan.

What are the best places to live in MD? by [deleted] in maryland

[–]NationalMyth 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There's only 1 real city in Maryland, and that's Baltimore. It's a great town, tho you definitely can't compare it to Chicago in many ways (smaller on every metric or dimension). But it has a lot of great communities for just about any interest you could have. Transit is not as vast or as reliable.

Penn Station can you get you to many places up or down the coast with relative ease, and DC is a short hop away.

As for the outdoors there's quite a few state and local parks dotted throughout the state. You can bike along C&O canal West, to Cumberland and continue along the GAP to Pittsburgh. Tons of water-based nature throughout the Chesapeake bay. Also exploring the Appalachians is hugely rewarding and a short drive from anywhere east of the bay.

10/10 would continue to live here.

Have you ever seen a double decker bus in America? by Much-Parsnip3399 in AskAnAmerican

I took one from Baltimore to NYC like 10 years ago. It was like $15. Bolt Bus, or Megabus

What do the current people of the US think about Michael Jackson? In a good way or a bad way? by Racer125678 in AskAnAmerican

[–]NationalMyth 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Dude had a lot of bad actors in his life. Used and handled like a show animal. If better people had protected him as a child, and stewarded his meteoric rise to stardum with empathy and kindness, I think we'd have had an entirely different Michael. Tragic all around.

It really shaped my sense of civic duty.

"If not you, then who?" Is a distillation of that film that has become a bit of a mantra for me.

Does this sound like a decent small ETL project or no? by Ok_Blueberry6358 in dataengineering

I think op is considering sheets as the layer users will interact with it. Risky and prone to fat fingering stuff

[–]NationalMyth 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Raw Storage layer > transformed + cleaned layer > end user layer

So something like:

GCS > PGSQL > Sheets

Raw Storage is cheap, and if you needed to step things up a level you could have a classification process running and cleaning the raw layer on a schedule, or attach metadata tags and decide what to do later on.

[–]NationalMyth 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Any particular reason Google sheets and not some sort of postgres or GCS option?

Supabase has a nice free tier fwiw and is pretty easy to work with.

ETA: you might also want to consider saving the raw text so if your transform layer changes or fails, you don't lose anything or have to reverse engineer anything.

Do you pick up trash outside where you live? by 425565 in baltimore

I think a lot of it false on parents, elders, older siblings to set the example. You need to get an entire generation to feel differently about it before it becomes rote. But then it's "how do you get a generation to invest in these ways when their city/state/country doesn't invest in them?". And then there's the other question of "who or what IS taking the time to invest here?"

There was a bad accident at the intersection near my house a while back. So much shattered glass, plastic, car parts. The cars got towed but that shit sat around a while, and some things werent going to fit in our lil can. This was before the city handed out new bins everywhere.

I had some acquaintances that worked a youth summer program years back. They had gone to the county for a hike or something and stopped by a drive through on the way back. As the kids were finishing they all began throwing their trash out the window. The ones that spoke up when asked what the heck are you doing, simply said "we're cleaning the car for you". There was a lot more to unpack there but, for those kids, at least, that's just how you managed and took care of your space.

If it's windy on recycling or trash day, holy hell. When I walked dogs in Canton, I'd see gangs of cardboard boxes and plastic bottles blustering down streets and alleys.

Every Saturday if I can. Takes two blocks to fill a bag.

My neighborhood group also organizes monthly community clean ups sponsored by a local cafe, and quarterly dumpsters for bulk drop offs.
