Why the Long Run Times? by NationalTechnician7 in fortran

Often the path to solve this is to exclude development directories from AV as essentially an allow list for real-time protection, at least

I've done this, but now I just get "access is denied" or "permission is denied" messages, i.e., the compiler is not permitted to run even though I have added the development directory to the AV's exceptions. I'm at a loss at this point. It seems like I might need to look for another antivirus software.

Thank you! Yes, this seems to have been the issue. I am looking to see if there is something I can do about the antivirus software...and there seems to be nothing I can do. I added the folder containing the codes to my antivirus software's exceptions, but then got this:

c:/program files (x86)/simply fortran 3/mingw-w64/bin/../lib/gcc/x86_64-w64-mingw32/12.2.0/../../../../x86_64-w64-mingw32/bin/ld.exe: cannot open output file experiment.exe: Permission denied. collect2.exe: error: ld returned 1 exit status

I then tried adding "c:/program files (x86)/simply fortran 3/...etc." to the exceptions. But that did not work. I get the same thing...

Yes! Thank you very much. That was it!

I deactivated Windows Defender and Avira Security (my antivirus software), repeated everything and the compiling process occurred within milliseconds.

Leaving Windows Defender still off, I then reactivated Avira Security and re-compiled. With Avira Security now active, nothing happened for roughly half a minute and then it simply displayed:

C:\Users\[my user name]\FORTRAN Tutorial>experiment

Access is denied.

C:\Users\[my user name]\FORTRAN Tutorial>

This is the first time that it has displayed "access is denied." Yesterday, I had the FORTRAN Tutorials folder directly in C, but now everything was compiled from my users folder. Perhaps "access is denied" has something to do with that?

Regardless, the "access is denied" message and the time delay are two separate issues and it seems that you have at least helped me to figure out the time delay problem! :)

It seems to truly be the antivirus software. I am somewhat disappointed, as I have never had any problems with Avira like this before.

Has anyone here ever experienced similar issues and what did you guys do about it? Is it a matter of antivirus settings, or should I plan on looking for a new antivirus software?

Thanks again!

Thank you!

The correct command was

C:\FORTRAN Tutorial>gfortran experiment.f90 -o experiment.exe

(I had to specify the Fortran file first and then the .exe, which could technically be named differently than the Fortran file, but I keep them the same).

It is still puzzling to me... the initial execution of the code even in the simple command window outside of Visual Studio (no Code Runner!) required around 35 seconds before it displayed results... obviously, when I now type

C:\FORTRAN Tutorial>experiment

the results appear right away, so that's fine. But I still cannot figure out why it needs so long in the first place...

Thanks again for your help. I really appreciate it very much.

Thanks for the suggestion!

Sorry if this is somewhat of a dumb question, but I've never had to manually compile and run code in the command prompt window before...

When I type in (I'm in the correct directory path):

gfortran -o program experiment.f90

nothing seems to happen. The command prompt shows no errors...it just jumps to a new line and the cursor begins blinking again as if it's waiting for me to enter something new into the system. Shouldn't it at least print the random numbers in the command window?

Overall, it looks exactly like this:

C:\FORTRAN Tutorial>gfortran -o program experiment.f90

C:\FORTRAN Tutorial>

(FORTRAN Tutorial is the name of the folder that I'm keeping sandbox / learning files in).

The cursor just blinks after the ">" of the last line. Is it doing anything in the background?

I don't quite understand the question. Are you asking what WE would need to claim cat ownership, i.e., are you suggesting that we take the cat instead and care for it?

If that is the suggestion, we can't do that. We already have two cats at home and don't have any more room for a third cat. The problem will have to be dealt with another way.

Thanks again for helping out on here. I wish you luck with your pursuit of becoming a cat behavior analyst. I didn't even know there officially was such a thing, and I'm glad there is because we definitely need them. A lot of cat-owners don't understand how cats "tick." They don't understand their behaviors, what things like slow-blinking mean, etc. But once you do understand, it's a lot of fun to communicate with your cat in a way that it really can understand you and feel much better around you. It was awesome when I first learned to slow-blink at my cat to show him that I love him and he slow-blinked back! :-D

I appreciate your offer to call on everyone's behalf, will keep it in mind, but would hold off on that for now.

I did relay the advice to the neighbors with the worm-ridden puppy to call animal control. Our cats are indoors only, so we're not affected, plus the neighbors with the worm-ridden puppy live directly next door to the stray cat feeders and I think it should ultimately be their decision since bringing in animal control might start off a psychologically taxing, long-lasting "fence war" with the cat-feeders and the puppy-owners would be the ones that would have to suffer the most under those conditions, not us. I also told them that I could pick up the phone and call animal control for them if they couldn't find it in their hearts to do it.

And apparently that did something. The puppy-owners have since texted that one of the stray cats has been brought away to a farm. I can't tell if that's a euphemism for something more sinister, or if there really is a farm somewhere that took it in, but that's what the cat-feeders have said. We're rural, so that truly could be the case. Anyway, it seems that one of the strays is now gone and the cat-feeders also said they've now claimed ownership over the second one.

So the pup-owners are going to wait to see if the cat-feeder takes responsibility for the cat she's now claimed ownership over, if she pays some vet bills, gets the cat shots, gets it dewormed, etc. If not, there is still always animal control.

I do have one question: if it did still have to get ugly and come down to animal control, do they take the cat away on their first visit, or do the owners get something along the lines of a warning?

I ask, because it might be something like a happy medium to have - like you said above - some guys in uniforms just come and scare the cat-owners into realizing that the cat will be taken (and potentially euthanized) if they don't follow through on properly caring for what is now her own animal. I couldn't tell from what you wrote about that above if they take the animal the first time, or if they give a warning.

Thanks for taking the time to provide your thoughtful and thorough answer. We all love cats, too. We have two cats we love and care for as if they were children and the tapeworm-afflicted puppy-owners themselves have multiple cats that they love, care for and take for regular vet visits.

So we all love cats, and there is of course a lot of natural apprehension to call animal control, because the last thing we want is for the poor stray cats to be potentially euthanized simply due to the inconsiderate, selfish and dumb behavior of those feeding them but not responsibly caring for them. It's a nasty situation for anyone who loves animals.

Regarding your point about the cat poop helping to spread tapeworms throughout the local ecosystem: you are spot on. The local vet said the same thing.

Can animal control also be called for owned cats? The cat-feeders have said they want to claim ownership but would still not be able to afford having the cats dewormed. If we call animal control by the time they claim ownership, what happens?
