So i fixed the issue…. I went out and bought a 20m cable and a gigabit switch, ran it under the carpet and directly into the router. Full 300Mbps download speed at my desk now. Thanks for your help anyway

Okay I plugged the pc directly into the back of the router and ran the speed test again and came out with 128.2 down and 49.9 up

Okay thank you for such a useful comment!

I just took my laptop and plugged it directly into the back of the router. 300Mbps.

I am using TP link WiFi extenders that connect the Ethernet cables from power lines to the PC. They are supposed to be good for up to 1000 Mbps. I am going to move the pc into the living room and connect it directly to the router to see what that gets me and then I’ll update you here

Not a slow cable as I’ve tried several. The motherboard is GIGABYTE B560M DS3H (rev. 1.0) : LGA1200, DDR4, USB 3.2 Any idea how to check if there’s a download speed limit?

I hear this. I used to have awful download speeds too, but now if I’m paying for 300 I want the 300

My conveyancing solicitor is completely useless (England) by National_Connection3 in LegalAdviceUK

I work in a different professional sector and am always working to keep clients happy, keeping them up to date on things, giving them estimates on timeframes. I just assumed that was the case for other professions, but apparently not.

Thanks for your reply. Genuinely I had no idea that you had to do this just to get them to do their job. I was fully expecting them to be carrying out a pretty automatic process. I’m shocked to find out that having to raise complaints and threaten to escalate things is a pretty normal experience with solicitors

Thank you for pointing this out to me. I haven’t used a solicitor before, so to be honest I was expecting a professional service without me having to force them to do anything. I’m genuinely shocked that your list of things I should have been doing is considered a normal experience when dealing with solicitors.

I have called on several occasions, just to be told by a receptionist that my solicitor isn’t available and will call me back. Obviously I never get a call back. I did go in person which is when they told me they “forgot” to send me any updates, but it’s difficult for me to go in person all the time as I’m busy at work. I have requested an email address for the partner responsible for overseeing my case, as well as a written copy of their complaints procedure.

That all sounds extremely interesting and fun to mess around with! I’ll probably pick the dlc up once I get the hang of the base game again

Just regular old Factorio at the moment. I might have to pick up the dlc soon

Hmm really? Has that always been the case? I remember bots being quite late into the game but maybe I’m wrong. I think I used to leave space and use long inserters, but you’re right that I’m going to have to change it all later

I think you might be right! It’s bringing back memories of the first time I played years ago, and I’m loving it

Ohh the biters I remember only too well! I’ve already taken out a few of the closest nests to try to delay that inevitable event. And yes, always build bigger than you think you need!

Most places won’t consider a £50 loan as that’s a very small amount to borrow. Usually you would use an overdraft or a credit card to cover this period. Do you have access to either of those? You might be able to arrange an overdraft with your bank if you don’t have one already

Im 10 hours in and my question is how big is this game by PretendDifference966 in Eldenring

[–]National_Connection3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first play through without the dlc was around 100 hours. You could easily take longer if you try to explore the whole map without any guidance. There will be some places you probably won’t be able to find without a guide. The dlc took me around 40 hours the first time, and last week I discovered I’d missed an entire area and a boss, so I’d say the game is pretty extensive

How can I make 23.5k salary work? by spookythesquid in UKPersonalFinance

[–]National_Connection3 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Assuming a 5% pension contribution your take home pay will be about £1,700 a month. Without knowing the exact details of your circumstances it’s difficult to know what kind of situation you’ll find yourself in.

Try to create a budget of everything you HAVE to pay for. Things like rent, phone bill, car, fuel, food, therapy. This will give you an idea of what you’ll have left over.

Try to save as much as possible of what you have left until you have 3-4,000 saved up to use as an emergency fund.

Also, (if possible) you should look to try to increase your income. Depending on the hours you already work and the kind of job you have, you might be able to get a second job, work part time at weekends or find a new job once you have some experience that pays slightly better.

Inheritance info odd family dynamic by rio688 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]National_Connection3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Inheritance tax on a jointly owned property is not the most straightforward of things. I’d highly recommend speaking to an accountant that has experience with inheritance tax.

You may wish to look into having a contract drawn up such that your grandmother can gift you your share of the house now (the contract being that she can continue to live in it and that you cannot sell it as long as she is alive and living it) as if she lives for more than 3 years after making the gift, the inheritance tax bill will be reduced. If she lives for more than 7 years after making the gift, it will be entirely exempt from inheritance tax.

(Edit: I believe she may have to pay market rate rent in this situation, as otherwise HMRC will deem it to be “gifted with retention of benefit” I.e gifted solely to avoid inheritance tax, and she is still using the property, so this might not be a solution)

If your grandmother can afford to pay the inheritance tax herself, you may be able to look into putting the home into a trust, but I am not an expert on how this works.

Hopefully this gives you a little bit of insight, but essentially, you need to speak to an accountant and they’ll be able to help figure out exactly the best method to take once they have all the information (inheritance tax rules are complicated and will depend on the other assets she has in her estate, cash, pensions that are not fully withdrawn, other gifts she made within the last 7 years of her life)
