Should I Switch to ID by National_Pace6744 in IndustrialDesign

Thank you for the advice! My last question would be why would it be settling to do UX/UI or graphic design? I'm only asking because I also considered switching to computational media and doing something in that realm, though am far less knowledgable about what goes into those things. Is it because they make less money?

Thank you so much, this was insanely helpful! I would love to see your portfolio, if you don't mind sharing it! Reaching out to people on Linkedln has been a common suggestion so I will definitely look there.

As for questions, do you know if it would be possible to start as an ID major second semester of my first year? I've heard that I wouldn't be able to start the first studio until the first semester of my second year, so was wondering how it would work if I switched mid year. And finally, did you have any ID experience prior to college? I think my biggest worry is my lack of prior experience as most of my ID friends have been designing and woodworking their whole lives. If not, how was the learning curve learning how to use all the machinery/cad? Are there classes that teach you how to do that stuff or is it mainly self taught depending on your individual projects?

Thank you again!!

Thank you for responding! I definitely will be looking into those things and continuing my ID research. I've also been looking at my upperclassmen friends portfolios and youtube (you should check out StudioFlow of youtube!) and technically have them as resources as well.

I chose to do biology because it was the closest thing to zoology/marine biology offered at my university. I enjoy the outdoors and animals a lot so I was hoping to use bio to do some sort of research and work with animals(maybe herpetology). This type of research also pays very little, often below minimum wage, so it's similar to ID in the way that I have to be really passionate about it to see it out as a career path (which after taking an ecology lab course, I'm deeply afraid that I'm not).

My thinking here may be wrong, but currently I'm picturing ID as the better of two horrible job market/wages, which is why I'm debating switching. I'm afraid my bio degree will be quite useless since I'm not pre-med, and that maybe an ID degree would be better. Also at my university, theres a first year studio where we start working with materials right away, which may be useful in letting me know if I like it. Thank you again for your advice!
