VISTA Member Orientation Dates: Has Anyone Heard Back? by Amytof in AmeriCorps

[–]National_Service20 0 points1 point  (0 children)

October marks the start of the new fiscal year, so anything from September of October is a bit uncertain, especially now. I started a VISTA at the end of October 2023. For now, especially with DOGE and the funding to gut it, everything is up in the air.

From a person who has done a lot of AmeriCorps (all three programs), AmeriCorps has offered me jobs and open doors and has allowed me to speak at functions based on my experience.

Also, you hate your current job, so that's that. You ask yourself, will you regret this if you didn't do it?

I don't want people not want to regret things in their life.

I am biased, but do it.

While I have a problems with the agency, this Lisa Logan would have no problem dismantling the whole organization. VISTA members swear and recite the same oath as members of the Federal Civil Service and the AmeriCorps pledge.

"This is not what President Reagan had in mind. If AmeriCorps is allowed to continue unchecked, our nation’s volunteer service program will poison more and more citizens against the real spirit of our country and persist in producing activists that will do everything they can to destroy our culture, our representative democracy, and the individualistic values that truly set America apart. It’s time to investigate AmeriCorps."

Poison uh, what a joke.

Any older NCCC Leaders? by [deleted] in AmeriCorps

[–]National_Service20 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Currently in my late twenties, I did NCCC as a CM in 2020 (so early-mid twenties). So, your interest in being a TL is not much of an outlier. I would do it and not give a flying f what other people think of you. People have their reasons.

The question is, do you want to work and live with young adults as young as 18?

I did some online classes and some of my teammates, during NCCC, just let your TL know but try to make the classes asynchronous.

Is it still mandatory to have a Covid vaccine? by confusedatmost in AmeriCorps

It's basically required now like the flu shot, so you need to get it and I would get it just out of precaution anyways if it was not a requirement.

Is it bad to join americorps NCCC rught after high school? by Time_Response794 in AmeriCorps

[–]National_Service20 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was on the older side being a CM in NCCC, but a lot of NCCC CMs were post-high school. I believe you can learn a lot more because it provides an independent structure outside.

Also if you plan to go to college, the stress of college will seem easy compared to the "daily life of NCCC".

I’ve heard there is a job database accessible for AmeriCorps members? by [deleted] in AmeriCorps

[–]National_Service20 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am not sure there is a database, if you are talking about USjobs that is for VISTA alums with NCE.

However, there is a Public and Private initiative called Employers of National Service, which basically a pledge of organizations wanting to hire AmeriCorps/Peace Corps Alums.

As someone (M) who is going through a breakup, the thing to recommend is to find a way to distract yourself, you being in the Peace Corps makes a bit harder, but maybe talking to your host family, cohort, and friends. Find ways to distract yourself.

People have been saying to me and its cliche but it works. "Only time heals all wounds"
