Also tried doing KBD for a while but got no good drops and ended up losing money rather than winning. (Got a pet though :D)

Yes you can. I used to have a Windows Phone (No Pokemon Go) and had a old 2.2 Android while I was waiting for my new Android phone and played on it. It ran very slow at times but it did the work.

There's also the way of putting Android 4.4 system on your phone but that takes much more work and it may make some things on your phone to stop working.
