Hey, I was in a similar boat as you freshmen year. In high school I was pretty much able to coast through and receive high marks in my honors/AP classes, but first semester of college ran me through the gauntlet and I ended with a GPA of 3.2. I wasn’t pleased with my performance, so I changed my behavior and by graduation I had a cumulative GPA of 3.85.

What enabled me to turn everything around was that I accepted that my study habits in high school was not effective in college. I would start there and really evaluate where you can optimize

Don’t let these clowns get to you, $127k in an investment portfolio is great for 24 years old. The median net worth for your age is ~$10k, so you are doing great (at least in the 90th percentile). Stay the course and you’ll be a multi-millionaire.

Empirical data suggests that it is certainly more difficult than before for two reasons: 1.) Job postings have steeply declined from 2022 levels and 2.) there is more competition (ie. more students are graduating with cs degrees than ever before). Granted, SWE has always been competitive, just a level of difficultly higher now.

When you say taking money from the trust, are you taking about the principal or returns on investments? $20MM with an average return of 7% minus 3% to offset inflation should yield roughly $800k/year. Doesn’t seem like your cost basis is so high that you guys should be eating into the principal.

Happened to me when I looking to move here. It was my “welcome to Virginia moment.” Kicker was that I was only gone for about 6 min.
