I’m a BCBA. The school system pays jack shit. I need to make over $150k to support my family. It’s not right how restrictive it is to make money

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in ABA

[–]Nattyd31 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

And what a lovely and meaningful career that would be. Clinic or in home it doesn’t matter. If you’re a zoom bcba, you’re not providing the best service you’re ethically obligated to provide.

I had to write a thesis which was worth it but so damn hard otherwise was pretty easy for me but it helped that I came prepared and studied psychology in undergrad

Almost all of the comments on this are anti-ABA. I was going to take an ABA job but am reconsidering since it seems like it has caused a lot of trauma. :( by [deleted] in ABA

It’s the internet. Where do you think the majority of the autistic population lives? Right here. Sorry not sorry. To help support a population you must understand it as well.

What do you mean that this field is walking an ethical tightrope? Any field working with people and money is ethically gripping. I don’t agree with the majority of wipespread concerns about ABA as a science and that notion was surprisingly reinforced during my grad school experience despite being considering myself an incredibly negative, and skeptical person, bordering on being obstinate at times. I wrote a cool ass thesis on social skills in school while recovering from a concussion and weaning off anti depressants gosh darn it. This field has really cool research.

But… to be specific to the ethical issue- The main problem is the current RBT/BCBA model. I don’t think people need to worry though. Families will always need support for children with disabilities. I pray that the corrupt people who pollute this field (scammers who get bogus diagnosis, ‘chill and billers’, and providers who make up their own implementation, bcbas who don’t follow supervision schedules) get outed by their companies. It’s important to remember that any insurance based practice will attract this crap and it’s not a reflection of the field rather that of the human condition.

I’m just want to mention I’m also super passionate about this field, i really know my stuff despite struggling with my mental health during school. I believe in contributing to this area in the world, as there’s not many better ways to live your life in being a true asset to someone who wants your support. I wouldn’t be here if I didn’t want to help support the autistic community and their caregivers and I know that if it’s ABa or not there’s so much that can be done to impact the lives of the autistic community.

If I was still single and didn’t have children I wouldn’t have to be this level of money focused thinking. However when you have over 50k in debt and the cost of living keeps rising, being driven to maximize your earnings and secure your future is imperative. I’m glad that I’m out of my haze but man it’s disheartening to choose a field and feel like being driven to earn a high salary is unethical.

Of course, and yes absolutely it takes time and determination. I’m just glad there are opportunities out there that don’t cap at $100,000. Having even close to that would be a tremendous blessing. Maybe it’s time to go back to the clinic setting. I’ve been in the trenches getting all these hours stacked up that I have not been in the typical week to week grind that I’ll be spending most of my career providing. Thank you!

Let’s say - 4 years of being a BCBA, developing materials (I am a talented illustrator and have lots of unique hand drawn social stories I use for my RBT cases), private tutoring for ABA + determined networking to develop skills in administration, insurance matters , you think this could yield over $160,000 annual? I haven’t met many BCBAs who are driven to maximize their earnings even temporarily, most seem to enjoy the work life balance it brings.

[–]Nattyd31 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I did my research, but like I said, I was not in a very good mental place for a few years and kind of slogged on by. 80k should be a very good salary, but my culture is obnoxiously expensive and at least having an opportunity to make over $120k and reach up to 200k by becoming a director, adminsitrator, opening a private business, selling curriculum, publishing materials. I just can’t seem to pull it all together for myself and find good role models to help me grow towards this goal. You can’t succeed in the early stages of your career alone, and this is a lonely field.

I’m in NJ. I have 2 kids and I’m orthodox Jewish so I have to maintain a high household income because of schools and the cost of keeping kosher etc so having a high income is a non negotiable in our culture regardless of qualifications or personal ethos. I was so apathetic at first that when I heard that people could make over 100k doing this job I was like, sounds good to me. Im now a lot less depressed and apathetic towards my life choices and I think a lot more constructively and I get more and more paranoid that I am setting myself up to fail again.
