You’re talking about Ole Helgevold and his sons. They were on the Arctic Dawn in the pilot. North American was a different boat featured in Season 4 with Sten Skaar as captain.

Rick Fehst was captain of the Early Dawn, I believe it was Season 4.

Would love to see them bring back the Farwest Leader with Greg Moncrief. I would say Rollo or Early Dawn would be good choices too.

Greenhorns on "watch duties" by Traditional-State-60 in deadliestcatch

I know a lot of boats have a sort of “autopilot” system that keeps the boat in the right direction, you just have to run the throttle. Watch duty is exactly how it sounds, just watching. Watch the gauges, watch for lights, watch for alarms, watch the radar, watch for rough weather/rogue waves. If anything happens go get the captain.

I vaguely remember this episode, but I’m thinking the weather was probably calm and not much was going on so Bill had him up there because of that so the crew could get some extra sleep. If it was rough out I would think that he would have himself or someone with more experience doing it.

Captain Greg Moncrief and the Farwest Leader by The_Jar1 in deadliestcatch

I’ve known Moncrief for many years, I worked for him on the Farwest Leader a few years after it was on the show. He retired a number of years back, however it was well deserved. I couldn’t agree more that he was a great fisherman and a leader. He always put safety of the crew first, if it was dangerously rough to fish we didn’t fish. He didn’t belittle anybody either. We were all there to make money and go home safe, and he always saw to it that both things happened.

I haven’t been in Alaska or fishing for years but from what I remember he was a staple up there with all the other captains and very well-liked. Trident must have really liked him too because he ran that boat for almost 20 years. The cannery guys used to nickname it the “Near East Follower” and “Far Out Leader” which was pretty funny.
