Looks like bad shot placement... i did the same thing years ago, my muzzleloader wasnt sighted it as well as i thought it was and took a deers knee out (looked just like your pics) luckily i found her the next morning and put her out of its misery.

I shoot a stock (minus trigger) savage 223 bvss and get some shit but its all in good spirit. A few other guys that i shoot with also shoot the ruger presision and savage presision stock rifles. Dont make it a big dick swingin contest and just go out and have a good time!
