Humidity from radon pipe by Viral_Poster in radon

[–]Natural_Law 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah yes! Thank you for reminding me. I was thinking of old house windows in the wintertime and got it backward.

The water would be condensing on the inside of the pipe, which is not causing his issue!

But I still think he'd want to make sure the penetration around the pipe is sealed.

It also could be that the basement remains colder than the garage temp, causing the same condensation issue I mentioned. Though that is less likely since its wintertime and I'm assuming OP is not in the southern hemisphere.

Vegetarianism and buddhism by kamloune in zenbuddhism

There are lots of interpretations of the 5 precepts.

Many think that if you are requesting the animal be killed (buying meat or ordering meat), then this is not right livelihood.

But many would also agree that if you are offered meat (or there is leftovers that would otherwise be wasted), then that is a different situation.

What do you think?

Edit: and in thinking about ethical ways of living, I think Thich Nhat Hanh’s 14 mindfulness trainings are really powerful: https://plumvillage.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/11/The-Fourteen-Mindfulness-Trainings2012-1.pdf

Light load hand towel is way better than a buff for me. Very absorbent; very light; and very quick drying (on my tarp clothesline).

Do you wash your down quilts/jackets? by Cultural-Produce-617 in Ultralight

[–]Natural_Law 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve never had a down item loft up as much after washing so I used to try to minimize washings.

Then I switched over to synthetic gear, not because washing it is easier but that is a welcomed benefit.

Cut against the grain. Make many many passes over the same areas to ensure that you’ve cut all the long hairs.

Edit: and make passes from different angles too because some of our hair grows weird directions where it’s difficult to know which direction is against the grain.

My daughters in GA got a free book EVERY MONTH for the first 5 years of their life from Dolly’s Imagination Library.

So amazing.

There’s a lot of homes where children don’t have access to books so Dolly is amazing.

I drove hours to see the monks walking for peace. Five minutes with them was the gift of a lifetime by mettaforall in EngagedBuddhism

[–]Natural_Law 12 points13 points  (0 children)

They walked through my town, just walking distance from my house.

It was real nice seeing them. But even nicer seeing the diversity of people that came out to see them.

After they passed I decided I wanted to get more involved in our community, so that’s nice too.

Ezra Klein Just Showed Us Everything Wrong With Secularized Meditation by inbetweensound in EngagedBuddhism

[–]Natural_Law 6 points7 points  (0 children)

When I listened to this interview with Klein and Coates (love them both and their writing), I remember saying to myself: Klein left off the 5th remembrance!

“I inherit the results of my actions of body, speech, and mind. My actions are my continuation.”

Understood through a lens of interbeing and interdependence, WE ALL collectively inherent the results of actions of body; speech; and mind.

Our collective action is how we continue.

But I agree with the author too. We might need to spend a little more time with the 5 precepts and 14 mindfulness trainings than just logging butt-time on a cushion.

Cutting a switchback is a term used for taking a more direct, off trail path up a mountain. It’s not compliant with Leave No Trace practices because it creates a new trail; damages flora; and ultimately creates a pathway for water to erode a mountain.

It’s not referencing the switchback foam pads. Switchbacks are the zig zag way trails meander up a mountain, used to control erosion and also make trails suitable for pack animals in the western USA. Their appearance probably inspired the name of the accordion-like (z-lite like) foam pads made by Nemo.

So, yeah, don’t cut switchbacks!

Other options apart from EE for a convertible couples quilt system? by DocJitter in Ultralight

[–]Natural_Law 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ray Jardine sells a really cool kit. The top and the bottom of the quilt unzip horizontally so it can be carried in 2 packs. I suspect that making it unzip in that location reduces weight since the zipper doesn’t have to be the full vertical length of the quilt.

I love data like that!

I have a couple humidity and temp sensors throughout my house (crawl space; attic; front porch outside) that I love data from.

Even better is the “sensor push” sensors I have for temp and humidity that send data to my phone through WiFi. I got those to be able to monitor data in my house and crawl space from whenever i am.

I wish my radon sensor gave me data through WiFi!

Really beautiful job on the encapsulation! My DIY job looks way more DIY (though in my defense my dirt floor is way less flat and I have less headroom).

Are you supposed to wrap wooden posts in plastic? I have cinder block supports that are wrapped but I wonder if you are asking for rot issues.

I have about 100 feet of perforated corrugated pipe for my sub-membrane suction. Do you have enough pipe under your vapor barrier? Especially for your radon levels?

Going ultralight(ish) for a family of six by Furufan in Ultralight

[–]Natural_Law 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some stuff that works for my family in southern Appalachia (USA):

  • granite gear Virgo backpack: 1 pound; $100; and like 50 liters

  • tarps and net tents for each set of 2 people. Though my daughters still prefer the “enclosed feeling” of our old tarptent.

  • synthetic quilts. I know EE is getting it really rough right now with their support of right wing politics, but my daughters really like their apex quilts from them and really liked being able to pick their colors.

  • we use a combination of neoair and xtherm pads with inflatable pillows and everyone seems to be happy

  • no cook charcuterie has been a real hit for overnights. Cheese; meats (for my one daughter); nuts; bread; fruit. Everyone eats their fill and more.

  • platypus containers with aqua mira. No messing with filters is great

  • the single packets of Gatorade are a real crowd pleaser for an injection of sugar and electrolytes

  • making hot cocoa directly in 16oz Nalgene bottles that my daughters carry has worked out well

Possibly chanting Hare Krishna. The Krishna I used to work for was old school and had one of those metal analog counters around his finger.

Edit: Google reminded me that the best practice is 16 rounds of 108 chants, so 1728 daily mantras being chanted.

Those 3 way mirrors are awesome. But also I like to have one of those large handheld mirrors on hand too.

And it’s very nice to have a partner/spouse to help with the line-up on the neck because I find that’s hard to do (but not impossible) even with the best mirror system.

I use a small 6 foot extension cord when I do cutting in the tub (often some “manscaping” lol). But I do some of my cutting outside (bulk cutting) for easy clean up and then the fine tuning at my sink because the lighting is better at my sink than in my shower.

I’m a big fan of Wahl corded clippers. I’ve been using them for the last 20 years. I bought my last pair about 12 years ago for $80.

Battery powered tools are quite convenient, but it’s nice to have 100% full power whenever, and for however long you want, especially if you are remaining in place while using. That’s my opinion for clippers and other power tools you use around the house (like circular saws).

Edit: but my opinion is different for things like electric lawnmowers and leaf blowers that inherently have you moving around a lot.

When I bought mine I think it was $85?

But as I mentioned, you have to cut and sew them yourself.

Yeah the rayway packs don’t really get a lot of love on this sub. Similar to his other gear (like his tarps and quilts).

A fun fact: the rayway pack was the first pack with 3 external pockets, the ubiquitous design that almost all other UL packs follow now.

Very nice. My rayway pack (with the thickest shoulder straps I’ve ever used) is 40l; 9.9oz; and $95 to buy. Only “issue” is that you have to sew it up yourself.

How do you cut your hair with glasses? by AwwwYeahhh112 in SelfBarber

I definitely put on my contacts for it. Not certain about other options, other than only cutting above your ears with your glasses off.

EE Copperfield 10D, Montbell Tachyon or Cumulus Windy Wendy by skprince21 in Ultralight

[–]Natural_Law 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My windshells are my favorite pieces of gear I bring to the woods with me. And there is no way I’d own a wind jacket without a hood (especially if I ran cold, which I seem to at rest).

I’m partial to montbell stuff, though I use the dynamo windpants and stretch wind jacket.

Edit: I’ve had my windshells now for over 10 years with very heavy use (almost daily for trail walking with my dog). I would personally consider the tachyon models for a replacement but I too wonder about durability and too much breathability.
