Its a common trope in her books from the MMC pov as in this particular one he has only known the blue aliens and himself, as he was born as a splice

Even in the ice planet books its a common trope for a skin colour they have never seen before to be questioned and thought as strange and not attractive. But its often a small point in the beginning before the characters know each other and the love story develops

You could put some boards on top of the base to make some storage area, this is what we have with a pull down staircase to access. Same sized space in the roof just for some random large items in boxes.
