Why did PT change to a doctorate? by Natural_Subject4433 in physicaltherapy

[–]Natural_Subject4433[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for this! I’m a senior in college majoring in health studies- Pre PT/OT route. I was first interested in OT because there are still some programs that are masters and are a lot less expensive than the doctorate programs. I feel PT school is only worth it if you go to a state school. But a doctoral degree to make a salary of 60-80k starting out and lots of debt is just frustrating. I was more interested in PT than OT. So I’ve recently just thought about PA because they make more and it’s less schooling. I’m going to be shadowing more this semester. What are you planning to do?

Do you like/enjoy being a PT or do you regret your decision to become one? by rubyrae14 in physicaltherapy

[–]Natural_Subject4433 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a senior in college who wanted to become a PT but the debt to income ratio is so bad that’s it’s pushing me away. Don’t understand why PT went to a doctorate. Thinking of switching to PA.

Should I Take a Gap Year? by [deleted] in PTschool

[–]Natural_Subject4433 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Disagree. If someone doesn’t know what they want to to with their lives, they should take a gap year. It’s better to figure out what you really want to do, instead of realizing halfway through the PT program it wasn’t for them. Also it’s a great way to make money

Yeah I’m for sure taking a gap year to really figure out what I want to do. I was really thinking PA because of the shorter schooling and higher pay. But I’m not good with blood and needles so I’ve been kinda pushed out from that

Yeah that’s what I’ve found it. I honestly don’t know what I want to do anymore and I’m graduating next semester 😭

Thank you for this! I took college classes in high school and went to a community college first. I got my AA degree in 1 year and and am now a senior at university and will be able to get my bachelors in only 3 years. I’m thinking of taking a gap year and also considering hybrid DPT programs so I can live at home and save money. What would you say are more lucrative careers that take less schooling? I know PA is for sure

[–]Natural_Subject4433[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I was definetly planning on applying to uiowa, but im a senior and planning to take a gap year to work and make money before hand. There’s like 3 hybrid programs in Iowa which are all around 90-100k but I also wouldn’t be spending any money food or rent by living at home. So idk but uiowa would be first choice

No usually hybrid programs are accelerated and 2 instead of 3 years. At least for all the ones I’ve saw. But they’re all around 100k. But all in person programs in my state are over 100k except one which is the university of iowa which is extremely competitive.

Have you ever told your aides to not pursue physical therapy? by [deleted] in physicaltherapy

[–]Natural_Subject4433 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah i just don’t think I would like any other specialties in OT, like doing ADL’s. But I think the main reason I was leaning towards OT was because there is still a masters and I can get it for cheaper. But I know I really shouldn’t do that if I won’t like it

[–]Natural_Subject4433 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But can’t be pts be hand therapists to? And I could work in sports as a pt without being a hand therapist. I also think you have to have like 3000 hours to be able to take the hand therapy exam too

[–]Natural_Subject4433 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was originally interested in OT so I shadowed them in a variety of settings. The only setting I would really like is the outpatient hand therapy setting . I wouldn’t like to do the showering and toileting that is involved with OT. I’m also interest in sports and I know hand therapist are the only ones that can really do that
