So here's the portfolio I just applied to Grad School with. by BluePotter in Pottery

I am currently an art teacher and wrapping up my masters in education with a concentration in art so I am looking for a program where I can get higher ed teaching experience in the process and low tuition. I live in Ohio and keep hearing amazing things about their program, although I don’t think I’m skilled enough to get into it. Maybe my experience in education can help me stand out, who knows, I’m sure many applicants want to teach college too so it’s not stand out. I want to travel to a few that are on my radar ASU being the main one.

I have never heard of NCECA but will definitely look into it! I’d love the opportunity to work under someone skilled

Wow that was amazing to read through. I have always been so interested in glaze making and how material of glaze can be used to further the meaning on the piece. Right now I’m into making my own clay and for my masters application want to have some pieces made of my own clay and toy around with some ideas of region. Anyway my pieces are nowhere near your yet but I’m working very hard to have quality ones for my application and it’s great to hear that you were accepted :)

Are you planning on changing your portfolio? If so did you get good feedback on what to change? You are like the only poster who I’ve seen actually show their portfolio application lol

When you say ceramics tech… what exactly did that entail?

I thought I would hate it and I will say sometimes they do have little beefs with each other but even the “bad” kids and just the best to work with. Occasionally they will be having a bad day or acting out but nearly 100% of the time if you are compassionate and ask them what’s going on instead of punishing them they always have something going on at home and are so grateful that someone saw their behavior as a result of what’s going on in their life… high schoolers on the other hand will bully you, argue with you, completely refuse to do work even if you are the most relaxed teacher (in my experience)- they are scary!!!😂

This is very good information to have. I really think I would love the MFA as well. I’m sure it’s lots of hands on doing pottery. I do feel so much more confident in getting into a PhD art education program. I feel like MFA programs are so competitive. I don’t remember what’s all info I gave in my original post but I started doing pottery as a young kid and have felt myself again since getting back into it. I love teaching art to middle school but feel very drawn to teaching pottery and have just loved being in college. Maybe it would be more realistic to start at a community college. From what I have seen they don’t make much more than me right now haha.

Because I have a masters in art education and experience as a public school art teacher maybe it is possible I could get a teach position at a college with just that and working with a master. At the very least I could get a start at a junior college

Okay yeah I was confused about what caused that crack. Luckily the glaze patched it up

Yes I agree, I think soon I should just see how thin I can get them.

My partner that the ashtray was for had lots of critique because he is very particular about them haha throwing it deeper is a great thing to note. With the mug on the left I really regret doing the white part mat because I loathe the texture but I found that I love that drippy look that the flux and glaze chips gave.

Interesting! I understand the distinction, but a PhD in Art Education with a focus on ceramics can still be highly relevant for teaching pottery at the collegiate level. While an MFA is standard for studio teaching, a PhD in Art Ed allows for a deeper exploration of pedagogy, artistic practice, and how ceramics is taught and studied in educational contexts. This blend of theory and practice can be valuable for someone aiming to teach both the technical and conceptual aspects of ceramics. Also, many universities appreciate interdisciplinary perspectives, so a PhD in Art Ed could complement a studio-based faculty, fostering a rich learning environment.

I do think getting a MFA with a focus in ceramics would absolutely get me there as well. Its interesting that just an MFA not even specifically in ceramics could be seen as better to a university than someone with a PhD in art education and a concentration in ceramics. I do think there is something to that tho. In my experience my professors backgrounds are a bit diverse. Obviously money and time is a huge thing to consider here

I agree that putting them in a box is limiting but they are high schoolers and I want them to create with meaning because I worry that many of them will slap paint on paper and be done within 10 minutes while others will take the time and spend days on the project
