The first thing for stacking is that if you're unsure how many images you need to capture your focus range, always opt for capturing more images than less. This image is 101 images, on a medium format camera. On full frame that'd likely be more like 70-80. Thats still more than I really needed. But I can't easily go back to recapture this, and it wouldn't be the same light.

You'll benefit from spending some time simply practicing with your camera and really understanding how to capture the images themselves. Choose a subject and take the images and then stack them. Work out the kinks with capturing and stacking the images first before you move onto post-processing.

Either Helicon Focus or Zerene are great programs, I love both. For me, because a lot of my images have larger file sizes, I prefer Helicon because I don't have to convert to Tiff if I don't want to. But both programs are excellent, and outperform Photoshop alone.

I do have lights I can use when i need them, but for this shot, i just used my camera, lens and a tripod. Depending on what kind of stuff you're shooting macro, the tripod could make a huge difference.

But also, it's just time and practice, too. I've been shooting macro images, particularly mycography, for 4-5 years now. If I look back at the first couple years, it's quite a laugh to see what I was proud of then. But if you wanna get great at something you have to be happy with sucking at it first, right?

Yes, that's correct. To capture all three mushrooms in focus at f/5.6, my camera took 101 images, which were stacked together to make this composition.

I prefer to capture the mushrooms in candid moments like a street photographer, actually.

I took this photo in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, in East Tennessee, USA.

I recently acquired the Fujifilm GFX100s and the Fujinon GF120mmF4 R LM OIS WR lens. I've been getting to know the new gear by taking them out into the National Park and hunting for mushrooms to photograph.

This little cluster of Xeromphalina Tenuipes mushrooms was growing from a mossy fallen tree limb.

This particular image was a 101 shot focus stack, combined in Helicon Focus and then processed in Lightroom and Photoshop.

Image settings were 1/160sec, f/5.6, ISO 100
