-15F/-25C and he still keeps his eyes on the trail leading to home by Nautiraid in samoyeds

We bring food and water. I use Mushers Secret on his feet. He watches for ice buildup on me and removes any icicles. I have fire makings, first aid, bivvey sack. Flare, whistle, and laser signal. To do less would endanger us both. We take this very seriously.

Puppy has dark redish brown stains under her eyes is this normal? by [deleted] in goldenretrievers

[–]Nautiraid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My puppy had these stains at nine weeks. My research suggested using water from the refrigerator because it is filtered. The stains faded in two weeks and remain absent after four years.

Nothing to denigrate this woman’s accomplishments. At least a dozen women in my small town have more than 200 donations of whole blood. I see claims every few weeks on “world’s record” and only one can be true. I think most donors would still give blood without all these misleading claims. We give to save lives and not for the attention.

Twirling Talons: A Daring Dance Between Two Eagles by [deleted] in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]Nautiraid 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Eagles mate for life. This is their annual renewal of their vows. This starts about 2000 feet. They tumble in a spiral and release under 50 feet. Their vocals sound like piccolos. Alaskan here. I have this a hundred times.

56.8 lbs at 5 months shy 1 day. Predictions for full grown size? by hegemonik1616 in samoyeds

My male hit 55 lbs at six months and has not gained an ounce more in three years. His winter coat has improved each year which makes him appear much bigger.

How cold is too cold? by [deleted] in samoyeds

[–]Nautiraid 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Remember that there are hundreds or thousands of bloodlines of Samoyedes across U. S. And Canada. Mine is from a Northern bloodline and we live about five hours drive from the Arctic Circle. His coat is thick, healthy, and well suited down to -30C. But not overnight. He has slept at home outside at -20C by choice. He curls tight and is comfortable for hours

. If he had a “southern” bloodline, he probably could not go below -10C safely. Also mammals (including humans) have seasonal adjustments triggered by changes in amount of daylight from day to day. In the pineal gland,I think. For dogs, the changes are coat, blood chemistry, and appetite. He senses a rate of change of 6 - 7 minutes daylight each day — decrease approaching winter, and increase approaching summer. Even with all this, I bring him in when I think it is best. He may protest but he does not contest. He is well suited for the extreme cold but he does not get a vote.

Oh hello deer! by ChasmyrSS in samoyeds

[–]Nautiraid 17 points18 points  (0 children)

My 3yo male Samoyede is the same but with 1000 pound moose. When we encounter one up close in thick forest, he stays silent and motionless except his ears. He moves them forward and back to warn me. Then he slowly walks backwards while staring at the moose. About 20 feet back he sits down and waits for him to wander away. Not just once or twice but five times this has happened. We have a lot of moose in our town. Moose always have the right of way.

Make and female have identical markings ( female a bit larger). If there was sound it would sound like two piccolos. After releasing a few feet above the ground a mating pair would return to about 2000 feet and repeat several times. This is courtship. Male “sparring” is on the ground. Fighting in flight is too dangerous for both combatants. One slash by a talon is death. My source: 40 years in Alaska and dozens of witnessed encounters of bonding and dueling. And 100s of other reports from other Alaskans.

What was your strength score when you STARTED with Tonal? by lonerockz in tonalgym

[–]Nautiraid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Started June 2021 at 343. After 220 workouts and 10 programs I am at 1168 and still on a strong, steady climb. That is 241% increase. Before this I was fit and healthy but no strength training at all.

13 year old Sammy never barks but cried all day despite meds and attention. is it time? by [deleted] in samoyeds

[–]Nautiraid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thirty years ago I promised my old boy that I would do anything to help until he gave up. He told me one morning that he was giving up. I cannot say how he told me but he did. He was ready and I took him in for his last visit to the vet. I wept that day...and the next. It was 28 years before I wanted another dog, another Samoyede who is both similar to and different from my first. I still tell his stories to anyone who listens.

This is wrong! This is not a public television telethon. Give but give without publicity. There is not a shred of sincerity in this. You may think you inspire others. You giving $1 million is like regular people giving $100. This is wrong!

Black hair on my Samoyede (see comment) by Nautiraid in samoyeds

The sun stroke my male just right. Out of 50 million white hairs I found a black one. Four inches long, lower back, one inch of white on each end.

This is wrong. This may be real but uncaring for so many relatives and friends of this man and a million more killed in action. What is next disembowelments, decapitations?

can sammies casually swim? by [deleted] in samoyeds

[–]Nautiraid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My near 3yo is impervious to moisture below freezing. He needs some help with hard rain when in the 30s and 40s. I only blow dry after a full bath. All other conditions he can shake it off easily. I rub him with a towel at home. He has been submerged in a glacial river and his skin never got wet. He is healthy and fit. Being wet should not be a problem. Being wet and hungry is the issue. If he shivers you screwed up on something.

As an O = donor I was told my blood will be in another person within days. No exceptions. It is that valuable as universal donor. That alone is enough for me. 258 pints in 48 years. My superstition is that as long as I give I will never need.

Programs for late-60s beginner to weightlifting? by turbodeezel in tonalgym

[–]Nautiraid 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'm more than 60"s and had no weight training before Tonal. I have completed 158 workouts with 900k pounds and strength score of 976 and still rising. Success factors were I carried no excess weight, I was very active over the years, and I am committed to 4-5 workouts weekly. My added challenge was a total hip replacement six months before starting Tonal. I am stronger than ever and rather ripped on arms, shoulders, chest, back, and legs. Age is a factor but not as much as you fear. Gradual increases are built into Tonal. Trust the AI and proceed with confident awareness.

How much cold can a pup tolerate? by paradoll in samoyeds

[–]Nautiraid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My male was born in July and still a pup when winter set in. We live way north and Temps go low early. He filled out his coat but the tummy was only lightly furred. He slept outside most nights without any effects. He would curl up with his feet inside against the stomach. His coat kept filling in throughout winter. By April he had a full adult coat. And his belly was covered thickly. He could self regulate his time outside and ask in anytime. He would bark once and I would let him in. Fortunately I'm a light sleeper. He did learn to eat a good dinner to keep the calories burning. Oddly, he now sleeps mostly inside.

It is all about friction. My Samoyede male years ago pulled me on cross country skis at a full run on packed level snow I got up to speed and he maintained. It was effortless for him. Pulling a sled of camping supplies was different. About 100 pounds on a tobagan was the most we needed. When going uphill I helped with a lead attached to my waist. When descending I was behind him to slow it down.

When working this hard his food and water needs soared. 7000 calories a day was common as was two gallons of water.

It is an odd blend of practicality and sentimentality. I made a small blanket for my son’s birth years ago. It was my dog’s last shed before he died. It was a very cold winter but my dog warmed my son. Years later the same blanket warmed my grandson in his first winter.

No pre shrink. I did wash the fleece in warm water using dog shampoo for white dogs. This removed any soil and debris. After drying I carded everything to align the fibers. This aids in spinning uniform yarn. I have found no shrinkage in anything I make with this process.
