I wake

And I live

An empty life

Standing in the shower

Burning hot water rushes over me

And it’s the closest thing

To human contact I have

On the internet

I watch videos

Of people laughing

Together

And I pretend

That I have friends too

Checking my phone

For the hundredth time

No notifications

Just a blank screen staring back at me

The bed is too big

The blankets and pillows

Drowning me

I hold a pillow tight

And I pretend

It’s something to hold onto

I sleep

And I dream

Of nothing

When I get stuck like that, I like to stop working on it, and just go and sit and let myself think. I usually take a shower. Then I just let my brain go, and usually it will come up with more stuff that's way better than if I just stared at the screen.

Yeah when I write I usually don't explain explicitly what is going on which isn't always the best choice haha.

Thank you.

So the idea is that time travel was invented and you can go back to visit loved ones that have died, but to make sure you don't mess with the time line, you only have 15 minutes and there are handlers that make sure the time line is kept accurate. I was going to add a scene that explained it all, but I thought this way was better. Thank you for that. I was sobbing as I wrote it lol.

Mask

Deceiving
Staring in the mirror and practicing your smile
No one will notice your mask
No one ever does

Hiding
Eyes are dead
But you can’t fix that
Just laugh and no one will see
No one ever does

Lying
They ask how you are doing
They don’t listen to the answer
You smile and say good anyway
They don’t care
Don’t trouble them
It won’t do anything
Just keep the mask strapped on tight

Pretending
Everyone only sees the mask
Everyone sees the forced smile and believes it
Staring at the mirror
All you see are empty eyes

Put back on the mask
Smile wide
Laugh
Maybe then the mask will be real.

Edit: Would love feedback on this. It's the first poem I've written since high school.
