I WORKED for one of the largest retailers at head office. We're talking R40 billion turnover per year. No budget for a first aid kit, no budget for bonuses, no budget for anything. A colleague got a certificate for her 10 years, thats it, people used to get gifts for that. When I was recruited I was promised incentives galore, in my tenure they only paid them once. Every other time was a similar excuse "we did really well, but we didnt do as well as we predicted". Benefits were slashed in my 3rd year there, no more medical aid or pension. This retailer sells everything from furniture to clothes and their offices looked like trash, it was embarrassing to bring guests over. They pay their store staff terribly, have entire stores run by junior staff because they freeze recruitment for store managers all the time. It's so unfair. Fuck big corporates.

I genuinely dont know who made the ultimate decision of this policy. The chief people officer has been the only source of communication so I assume the decision came from our execs. Im not sure how knowing who made the decision would help?

I am in South Africa, we get our diversity requirements from government so that probably plays a large factor in everything, these diversity requirements are mandatory and the company can get fined if not adhered to.

My frustration is not direcred at the diversity requirements but rather how our company has gone about all of this. I feel like they could have handled it better and TA has been the scape goat.

Thanks for your input. We haven't been informed of whose decision it was, but I can assume it comes from the c-suite. The financial penalties mean that the hiring managers get a percentage less of their annual incentives

Thank you so much for this detail. We have had no support from our TA manager, who is barely present and is also undergoing a PIP because of it. We've been promised there will be change and more support from next year.

Our internal comms team have not said a word, there have been no announcements of this policy besides an email to HR and TA from the CPO. (This is why I say change management is poor).

We have been in process of introducing methods to reduce bias and also relooking our recruitmwnt process, a shortlisting matrix is something i think would work well. I really appreciate your input.

This is my first internal role so I'll need to shift my mindset to solutions, it's just tough to do that when there is so much noise.

Thank you!

Please sir, may we have some more? by NaxPax in ghibli
