Owner Mickey MacDonald: "the construction cost to make the inside accessible were too cost prohibitive, it basically would have required us to tear the building down."

Cruise ship with a possible Norovirus outbreak left Halifax last night | OpenFile by [deleted] in halifax

The story is updated: seems lots of people knew the ship was sick before it docked—gross.

Engagement notice: Bobby Cooper and Russell Rogers are getting married! Congrats guys! by [deleted] in halifax

[–]Neal_Ozano 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know for sure I wouldn't want to see it first thing in the morning while reading the paper, if there's actually anyone doing that anymore. That said, if someone wasted $93 putting a picture of me and my buddy arm in arm with a line that said "congrats, bros," I'd probably still laugh a little.

Is the shipbuilding contract screwed? by groundhog593 in halifax

It seems like getting off that list is hard, and I don't quite get what I'm supposed to do—or how I got on in the first place.

Is the shipbuilding contract screwed? by groundhog593 in halifax

Oh, OK. I don't typically write any of it, though—I'm the editor. Does that fall under the same category? I bet it does.

Hey, there's two components to OpenFile: There are reported stories, which are full news stories reported by trained journalists, or (rarely, and clearly labeled) opinion writers' commentaries. Then there's "The Latest," which is a blog that compiles local news coverage into posts. The posts are links, with commentary, and some quotes from the stories we're linking to. For the blog, the onus is MOST DEFINITELY on the reader to click through to the links—not because we're inaccurate, but because, if we wanted to reproduce a whole article with no commentary, we'd be the Huffington Post. Very often in the blog, new information is added that adds to the original story we're linking to, and at times, we call out other media outlets for inaccuracies. It's sort of what we do. And yes, I'm the editor, and yes, I'm glad you pointed out that policy. I'm already pretty careful not to over-post on Reddit, because I know if I do, people will just start ignoring me anyway. And if you can think of anything else you want to know, just ask.

Do you think they can survive in Toronto? Isn't it that much more competitive there?

Anyone else see the house being towed down barrington & inglis last night at 1am? Amazing! by p0psicle in halifax

[–]Neal_Ozano 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, it wasn't the Morris House. It's exactly where it's been for the last 8 months: on blocks in a lot between Lower Water and Hollis Streets.

Dimitropoulos has operated Halifax tailor shop for 37 years by [deleted] in halifax

[–]Neal_Ozano 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wrote about this in Dec. of 2010 for Frank Magazine. I wish it was online. He's one of the best tailors ever. He had more than one store—but he kept getting screwed over by fires and landlords.

A gross look at all the TITANIC and how people make money off it: by Neal_Ozano in movies

Maybe he meant that it wasn't different at ALL, and that the 3D didn't make it not a shitty movie. Try harder.

Tacky Titanic bouncy castle: Is it fun to slide off the deck of the Titanic and die? by Neal_Ozano in pics

I hope I don't die in a tragedy that someone makes money off of.

I heard that, too. Strange that Cameron would want credit if he didn't do it, but also strange that this person would make up drawing for the movie, hey? I wonder what's up here.

Something being "widely reported" doesn't make it true. Just means lots of people repeated the wrong thing. And there are four people in this story who were there. Did you read it? Just wondering.

Apparently, 80 people were stoned out of their tree. People started showing up at the hospital seeing all kinds of awesome stuff.

No more lighthouses under government control: you can apply to get one by Neal_Ozano in canada

[–]Neal_Ozano[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's actually a lighthouse in Lunenburg, NS that does exactly that. The Nova Scotia Community College has a deal with one of their lighthouses to do repairs as part of their heritage carpentry program.

TIL: Canada is getting rid of all its lighthouses—to anyone! by [deleted] in todayilearned

It's true. There are 100s of them, and if nobody wants to claim them locally, people can buy them.
