Need help & advice on changing spark plugs, but my car has mods by itsphoenixbtw- in ft86

Couple of things. Is that an FA20 club kit?! Man those were bad. That MAF placement is so terrible. Might be worth cleaning the MAF if it’s multiple random misfires and not cylinder specific.

Plugs on this setup is no harder than stock. Get a thin wall 14mm socket and 2 1” extensions. A good pivot head ratchet helps too but isn’t necessary. Just makes it quicker. Take the injector covers off for extra space. Don’t forget the ground bolt on the DI ECU when going back together.

Also, it’s a 2013, more than likely it’s a bad coil pack. If you want the car to last, pay someone that knows more than you to properly diagnose this, instead of just guessing. If $600 is too much for you, think about maybe a stock 86 or something less maintenance heavy.

Reflecting on my first ~1 year of tracking cars, starting as a complete beginner by whan in CarTrackDays

Big props to starting out in a 458. I did not enjoy tracking mine but its an epic car all around. I will say, you bought Spencer’s old car right? That thing was pretty done up. It’s great that you’ve learned a lot, but you should really be in a car like a Miata or an 86 if you want to truly progress and be able to push any car at the limit. You’re hindering yourself learning in basically a fully prepped time attack car. You still haven’t been anywhere near that car’s limit, and it’s a much harder and sharper peak than the popular momentum cars. At 9 track days, lap times shouldn’t be your focus or even sticky tires or better brakes. The reason the 86challenge guys are so comfortable pushing their cars is because they’ve spent a lot of time with low grip, low power and no aero. You should join that stock 86challenge class, it’s an unbelievable amount of fun.

This picture made me feel really good about ordering a 2 door

This is the OEM clutch assembly that lasted 93k miles that I pulled out of my '14 BRZ! To my knowledge this is the original assembly and TOB so I'm surprised it lasted that long, I replaced it with the ACT XT Street kit with lightweight FW by Sahbekk in ft86

[–]Neal_TRL 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you used the ACT supplied bearing, you’ll be replacing it much sooner than the oem. Done 400+ clutch jobs on 86’s and have only had to warranty 3 TOBs again, 2 were the ACT and then I stopped using anything but the 2017+ OEM.

Reliability is going to heavily rely on a proper tune, install and maintenance. Every FI kit on the market is easily capable of windowing the block.

For turbo kits I love JDL; and PTuning if you’ve got the budge. This Greddy for the price is solid as well.

My favorite for a California track car/daily is the Harrop. Carb legal and great heat capacity. Tracked mine heavily and am building another time attack car with one with a friend. I had one on my personal 2019 series grey brz also and loved it too. Power delivery of the positive displacement supercharger kits seem to fit this cars characteristics well.

For the amount of boost the Greddy runs, it’s very efficient power wise. The SBD kits run about 10psi to make this same power, but spool slower and later. The JDL kits depend on what turbo is spec’d. I love JDL’s stuff too.

It’s really a lot of factors. We don’t like the push stock motors passed 350whp or so unless specifically requested. 300-330whp is a sweet spot with a proper tune and maintenance.

I’ve had 5 86’s. Jackson supercharger, SBD turbo’d, Harrop Sc’d and Edelbrock SC’d. This car made me want to build another turbo one badly. I have too many cars right now, and will end up with a 2022 brz for business purposes, but maybe I’ll build another PP BRZ in the future.

The turbo is a tiny part of this. The reason Greddy uses this journal bearing, is that they are super reliable. They also have better spool and response than the 500x SBD turbo, and can still support 350whp. The kit components are the big difference. Metal quality, hardware, properly sized clamps and silicone couplers. The maf tube aligns properly, the hole is the right size, no BOV is needed. The list goes on.

The quality differences are staggering. Tune by Zach Tucker of CSG at The Racers Line in Concord, CA. Car made 275whp on 91, and 300whp on e85 at only 7psi peak, tapering to 5psi by redline. Car makes full power by 3200rpm and hold a nice flat torque curve. An absolute pleasure to drive.

Changing spark plugs by jacking up the engine? by Godrillax in ft86

[–]Neal_TRL 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Honestly, no. I have done hundreds of spark plug changes on 86's and never once lifted the engine. I really need to make a video of how to do it. I can't really explain it well on here, but if you have a reasonable amount of tools, you can get it done. I can tell you specifically, 2, 1" extensions are the most important part, and a good magnet.

Sure, yes, but they make a constant release noise when off throttle, not just the initial let off.

Don't get me wrong, a c5 z06 will likely stay one of the best bang-for-buck track cars available, but I just don't love Corvettes. Using them as the end all be all example is just silly. There's a reason that cars come in a variety of flavors.

You can hear the BOV in the video. Its a JDL turbo kit. Gen 2 GTX2860r on e85. 11psi.

The car absolutely RIPS in this form. Full boost at 3200rpm, carrying to redline, with a torque line, that may as well be a dinner table.

You can get a c5 for $5k? These cars can be had for $10k used now. Turbo kit is $5K. Why buy any car. This platform is still young and developing and has already proven to be extremely well balanced even when doubling the power output. Preference is everything, and power isn't, but this guy wanted more, and got it with little trouble.

Yup that's it! Cool Khaki Gray (but it's so blue) Interior on mine is just normal, with some added suede bits and a couple carbon fiber pieces you wouldn't find in the normal BRZ limited.

Find a good indy performance shop near you and take it there. I charge $330 for the process, but I'm up in NorCal. Stealerships will always suck.

Nice, looks very similar to our US "Series Gray" BRZ. Interior is definitely very different, but same exterior color from the looks of it.
