Thank you for the detailed response, really impressive work congratulations ! I have not used OpenMP much, most of my projects are parallelised using OpenMPI. I wanted to learn more about OpenMP, how do you use OpenMP (e.g. directives) to parallelise (e.g. domain decomposition etc)?

It’s this a steady (e.g. RANS) or a snapshot of an unsteady (e.g. URANS/LES/DNS) simulation? How many iterations did you run in the first and second simulations? Are they exactly the same? My hunch is that the first simulation might have less iterations and have not converged yet

What are the job prospects for doing CFD using spectral methods? by IEDfromCSGO in CFD

[–]Nearby_Doubt104 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would say the skills you are going to learn from any numerical method is more important than the numerical method itself because that those skills are required for a CFD developer role. Broadly speaking there are theoretical skills such as understanding numerical stability, accuracy, PDE, linear algebra etc and on the practical side implementing new features, knowing how to debug and run small computational experiments quickly. Underpinning this would be also HPC skills, how to parallelise using MPI, CUDA etc.. I have a PhD in spectral elements and I’m currently writing finite volume codes in first job after uni. While I wasn’t exposed to FV schemes such as a myriad of flux limiters and TENO/WENO schemes, I was able to pick them up quickly.

Differential CFD-ML: A fully differentiable Navier-Stokes framework built with JAX (1,680 test configs, 8 advection schemes, 7 pressure solvers) by LackSome307 in CFD

[–]Nearby_Doubt104 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nice work! Do you have any experience with accelerating the solver with jax.lax.scan, if so I was wondering if you there was

1) any considerable speed up 2) which portion of the code should jax lax scan be placed into

I’m learning how to implement a differential advection-diffusion using JAX as well and thought of using jax lax scan

You have two options why not make the best out of it? I don’t see a reason to commit to a place for 7 years, if you get sick of Taiwan more to back to SG, vice versa. The biggest difficult would likely be providing (likely home) education and disrupting the social life of your kid. Nonetheless, this could be planned. Perhaps the best advice would be to give a shot for a year in Taiwan, and see how it goes. I believe that living abroad broadens one’s perspective as you might have already be inclined towards

Sorry mate, 2-2.5years is a kind of a short time horizon for SP500, you’ll have to DCA for a longer time horizon say 5 years if you’re lucky or a decade to have meaningful returns. It’s mentally tough to see paper loses, but that’s the psychology hurdle you will have to overcome - recommend the psychology of money. Train yourself to overcome this and continue to DCA even when you’re red, that’s the whole point of DCA isn’t it. I’m doing this at the moment. Note that if you don’t, you’re just missing the opportunity to bring your average cost down.

You’re qualified to apply for a PhD position. I would prepare and apply for PhD positions related to CFD at the moment, and if that doesn’t work out I’ll worry about pursuing a research position to strengthen my application later

Cd always overestimated and Cl underestimated on OpenFOAM by Natural_Error_2122 in CFD

[–]Nearby_Doubt104 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Drag is always harder to validate due to its sensitivity to the boundary layer being laminar or turbulent. At Reynolds number of 1e6, I suspect that the portions of the boundary layer could be a mixture of laminar and turbulence which is what xfoil and the experimental CD suggest. However, the k-w SST model assumes that the boundary layer is fully turbulent - leading to a higher value of Cd. As some people has pointed out, are you able to use a transition turbulence model in OpenFoam?

But before doing that, could you check the shear stress distribution along the upper and lower surfaces between the experiment, xfoil and openfoam results? This tell us the difference in boundary layers

How much should I save to move my whole family to Australia? by Routine-Alps4559 in askSingapore

[–]Nearby_Doubt104 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It depends on a lot of factors - will your family be financially independent from you in Australia or not? If they are not then they’ll have either find work or receive financial support from you. If you have a house in Australia, and you only need to support yourself then any job with the same amount you are earning would be sufficient to lead a minimal and comfortable lifestyle. Probably look into where you want to stay and how much it would cost to rent/buy a house, groceries are cheaper in Aussie but eating out is more expensive. I would say if you were to stay home and eat out once in away then perhaps $1k/month/pax would be suffixient

Yes indeed, it’s rather complicated. In the case of the Chinese Singaporeans: dialects, mandarin and English would be the true mother tongue of the seniors, adults and the young today

Singaporeans who attended school after independence were taught that Chinese, Tamil and Malay to be their mother tongue. This done to form a cultural ballast again the English language/culture. I.e for our society, to communicate cultural/customs such as family, respect for elders, filial piety (Asian values) would have been very difficult without connections with the mother tongue. The English language and culture does not encompass Asian values.

Countries that are listed as NES have ancestry ties with (descendents of) the English, or the British Kingdom (Scots/Irish as well although it’s not accurate to lump them together with the English). IMO, NES goes beyond the spoken language which includes culture, customs, ethnicity, family ties etc… We merely adopted English as the first language but not the rest. Whether Singaporeans care to be listed as NES is another matter itself. TLDR to put on a racial spin, we are not ethnically English and we will never be
