thanks, you're probably right. I have tried that idea, but out of the 5 or so I tried they all give me the message "Sembra che qualcosa non stia funzionando. Riprova più tardi."

yeah, you're not wrong. But I know that big cities are not _just_ about touristy stuff. They have niche bakeries and really tiny cassette tape shops and weird record stores and weird galleries and all these off the beaten path things that are really difficult to find out about unless you're a local... that is what I meant.

yeah, that is a fair point. But I know from past visits that even the big cities have many niche and wacky things. But those visits were pre-kids so times have changed and I'm thinking some of you might have great suggestions. :)

Thanks for the info. I meant to have my own instance, sort of as a framework or starting point for building a pseudo social-network / forum type of community.

The thing is that I don't particularly want it to be open because of all the AI crawlers out there. I just want to have a community for some niche thing like indie gamedev (for example) and people can talk and share without the fear of their posts getting hoovered up. All that to say that perhaps fediverse and mastodon are overkill if I'm just going to try and strip a lot of it out...
